Ah, Kohi beach. The next beach along from teeming Mission Bay, Kohi provides a welcome departure from the throngs of crowds, and a bit of peace and quiet. Granted, there aren’t nearly as many shops & cafes around(Kohi beach café/the Store are really the only beachfront options), but as long as there’s nice coffee and/or ice cream available, I’m set :) A bit of local flair: Thursday nights during summer, Kohi beach transforms into a swimmer’s haven, with casual swim races and prize giving starting at 6PM. Fun to participate in(can sign up on the day) or attend to cheer on your friends! Pro-tip: Kohi’s also an ideal spot for kitesurfing on a windy day, if you’re into that sorta thing.

Without a doubt my favourite of the inner city beaches in Auckland, Kohimarama is like Mission Bay’s grandmother. It’s quiet, unassuming and generally doesn’t attract loads of teenagers and their footballs. I find the sea around Mission Bay dirty and full of seaweed. Because of its location near the port, the water just feels a bit contaminated so it doesn’t make for good swimming conditions. It’s strange considering Kohimarama’s close proximity to Mission Bay but this beach just feels so much cleaner and less polluted. You can actually see your feet when you stand in the water here! Also, due to the fact that there are hardly any cafes or restaurants littering it’s sidewalks, Kohimarama never really feels that busy. It’s the perfect place to come for a relaxing afternoon in the sun with a picnic and a good book. Quiet, peaceful, perfect.

Just down the road and around the corner from Mission Bay beach, but much less crowded. If you want beach time, but don’t want to fight with the crowds, go to Kohi Beach. It’s a lovely and very easy and flat walk/stroll/scooter/run from Mission Bay to Kohi, and you can continue around to St Heliers. Pros: way less people, so you get more beach space. Parking is slightly less of an issue — there are heaps of little side streets and it is generally easier to find a park than Mission Bay. The amazing Kohi Café is across the road — so popular you often have to wait for a seat! Cons: no playground like Mission Bay. Not as much shopping or eating choices.
