One of the little bays that you might not notice as you are driving on the Harbour bridge(away from the CBD) — but if you’re sitting in Shoal Bay– you get a great view onto the bridge and the city behind it. Little Shoal Bay is a mudflat where boats are anchored, swimming isn’t a thing, there is an expansive nearby field and a bush/wetlands walk(Le Roys Bush Reserve). There is a playground to the corner as well as a decent sized car park. Lots of green areas for travelling campervans to make a pitstop and get some outdoor air. Picnic table available and a free tennis court as well if you play. Best when it’s high tide so the bay is full otherwise at low tide, you can walk towards the bridge– be sure to wear gumboots though cause it gets quite squelchy muddy on the shoes. Otherwise there is an elevated stone edged walkway with some crowded bush and greenery. Gorgeous views across the bay especially as the sun is setting– making it golden. Definitely recommend coming as the sun is setting– when it isn’t too hot and you can relax with a neat vista.

Little Shoal Bay is my summer hang out with my toddler. In one place you get everything you need for a little kid to entertain itself for a few hours. You have the playground, with swings, and a few slides and other fun balance walks and tunnel crawls. A beautiful view of Auckland harbour bridge to your left of the bay, and far beyond Herne bay. Free BBQ’s are available to use for a picnic, or birthday party with a push of a button, just bring your meat and salad, and you have dinner sorted with a million dollar view. There’s a little beach here too, and when the tide is full you can have a safe swim with the kids. Dogs are always bounding around the park, and you get to gaze out at sailing boats and fishing boats floating in the harbour. It’s all quite picturesque and beautiful, and amazingly ten minutes drive from central Auckland in good traffic. If that’s not good enough for you, the council have newly built in permanent outdoor exercise equipment, and you can burn some calories after that BBQ perhaps.
