I have vivid memories of coming out to Lloyd Elsmore every week in the evening for a hockey game when I was at school. Some days it was sunny, some days it was raining, often it was cold — thankfully Lloyd Elsmore has a decent inside area that you could take cover in after/before your game and warm up with some hot chips from the café. There are also two small shelters on the opposite side of each pitch where you can store your gear in whilst you’re playing or hang out in if you are a coach, reserve or supporter. Other facilities at Lloyd Elsmore include the newly developed track(which is nice and bouncy to run on), a large park where you can walk your dog, skate ramps and also an indoor recreation centre, which has a pool and a gym. As you can imagine, its not just hockey that is played here — badminton, cricket and rugby are also in the mix, and you’re likely to find these teams training here on days they don’t have a game.

Well, I have no clue who Lloyd Elsmore is, but he makes a pretty cool park. Covering a significant expanse of East Auckland, it has a swimming pool, skate ramps, fields, sports clubs and the Howick Historical Village on site. Walking my dog here, I spied cyclists on the skate ramps, kids laughing on the playground, cars driving to and from sports matches and new games being set up for kids after school. They have plenty of sports days here — I know, because I can hear the announcer from my house a few kms away! It’s also a good place to host an event, as I remember coming here a few years ago for a South African Festival. If you’re looking for a day of fun, I reckon Lloyd Elsmore will fill your Saturday quite nicely.
