Marco Polo was probably the first roast shop I ever went to. Which is a pretty sad thing, considering it only popped up about 7 or so years ago. It’s had a few change of hands over the years, but continues to reliably put out good, hefty feeds that don’t cost the earth. You know what your getting at a roast shop. Crackling, potatos, well cooked meat, peas and corn. It’s so ‘New Zealand’ it almost hurts. If you want comfort food, you should definitely come along to Marco Polo. If you want an exciting food adventure, there are definitely far better options in the area.

I’m never quite convinced by roast shops. Are you a less interesting kebab shop? Are you what my dad cooks on weekends, but in takeaway form? I mean actually, I quite enjoy them. A roast beef sandwich with gravy and stuff is just a yum thing. It’s hard to screw it up. And Marco Polo does a good job of not screwing it up. This is solid, enjoyable food. Nothing flashy, but the benefit of not taking risks is there’s little chance of failure. The shop itself is pretty unexceptional too, but it’s pleasant and clean. I’d happily eat here again, but there are probably more exciting options in the area that might overshadow the unassuming, homely comfort of a roast meal. Also if you’re vegetarian then this place won’t be that appealing to you. But you probably knew that.
