Another assembly-line taco/burrito joint. Good tasty food and great value for money. Everything is fresh and has plenty of flavour. The salsa bar was a bit of a let down — seems that the salsa is made with tinned tomatoes. I’d pay a couple of bucks more for fresh. They stock Höpt drinks, which are delicious, Mexican beers and tequila slushies. Better than Zambrero due to the food having more flavour. Also, if you sit outside, you get to check out the cool architecture of the Ironbank building, which is awesome.

Dunno what it is about Tuesdays but it’s the day for food deals all over town. Mexicali is no exception. $ 3 tacos are a huge win. Two kinds of beans or mince, with all the extras. Yum. Overall very happy with the place. I think I’m just getting used to the flavour(I work above it) so it doesn’t excite me anymore. Hence 3 stars. They probably deserve 4 to be honest. Burritos can get a bit more costly than some other options, but it’s a pretty good mid range option. Family owned too, and everything made fresh daily in house. Gotta love that

Taco Tuesday, would thou be as sweet without the alluring alliteration? No, but the tacos would still be $ 3 at Mexicali fresh all day! I am always keen for a cheap, healthy-ish not-made-by-me meal the wrong side of payday and this is where I hit to make that happen. There are different specials each day of the week, by signing up in-store for their loyalty scheme you get a free meal in the month of ya birthday and other perks too. It is not Mexican, it is Cali– style AKA homogenized mexican for the american palate but its fresh, healthy-ish and tasty and they have a great range of promo items that come on & off the menu. TL;DR Fast food Cali-Mex, does what it says on the box. Bonus: Frozen Margaritas $ 5 during Happy Hour!

One of the greatest trends to happen to Auckland recently has been the plethora of mexican restaurants that has opened up. Mexicali Fresh is the most recent addition, and it holds its place well on K Road — although if it was closer to other establishments it may have had a bit of a problem. I’m discounting California Burrito from that list of competition — because that has nothing to do with Mexico. Mexicali have a good sized range of meals, and deals constantly coming up — my favorite is Taco Tuesday where you can get one for 3 dollars. They also sell a really good chilli beer here, which is hotter then the meals themselves.

Man I love Mexicali. I used to work just down the road from it and it was a serious weakness for me. I think I went there so often because it’s just really good food and it feels a little healthier than most fast food options. I crave it loads now and sometimes even make a special trip into town to get it. My favourite thing to get is the pork nachos. They are so, so, good. Just as good as any top Mexican restaurant in Auckland I reckon. You can also help yourself to as much salsa as you like, winning! The staff are always really cherry and like to have a bit of banter as you make your way down the salad bar. You can also get them to cater which I think would have you on the good side of your boss and colleagues if you got it for a work lunch.

I like good a burrito. And I especially like Mexicali Fresh burritos. But I really don’t like this particular branch of Mexicali Fresh. When you compare this one to the one on Nuffield Street, it’s just a bit rubbish. There’s hardly any seating in there and any they do have is on tall stalls and narrow tables and just makes for an uncomfortable dining experience. I also don’t think the burritos themselves compare either, the one I had from here had way too much guacamole in it – I didn’t realise that paying an extra dollar for it involved getting like, three tablespoons of it in my wrap. It made the whole thing cold and sloppy and taste, unsurprisingly, just of mashed avocado. I like that the place on Nuffield Street has dim lighting and has a whole wood theme running through it, making it feel more restuaranty rather than a cheap fast food place. This one is a bit too open and bright, with windows on all sides so everyone that walks past can see you(inevitably) with guac all over your chin.

I love it. It may not be the most authentic Mexican food around, but it is quick, moderately cheap, and delicious. Great way to have a casual dinner that’s not fast food or cheap Chinese. The burritos are a respectable size, and they go down well with a Corona. I knew a guy who used to work there, usually these stories end with the discovery of some really unhygienic behind closed doors act, but according to him they have extremely high standards of cleanliness. He said that if there is even any question to whether the ingredients are fresh or not they just throw them away. Hearing this made me happy, since hearing that I go there all the time.
