Mt. Albert library is my closest library, but it’s not the one I frequent. Without wanting to criticise this library too much, I still find it worth taking that extra bus ride into town to visit the central library. The book selection is at Mt. Albert, I would say, average. These things are totally subjective but this place leans far more towards thriller & romance novels and self-help books than it does towards classics of literature or comics, so bear that in mind. Like I say, this is subjective. This library caters very well to people that want the books they have, I’m just not one of them. The one thing I really have to complain about here is the air conditioning. There’s too much of it. I don’t just mean that it’s too cold — although that is part of the problem, even in summer when you want to be cooled down — but rather that the air itself is too conditioned. Stay here too long and the plastic-and-ozone smell will wear at you, as will the dehydrated sinuses.

This library is a busy one, situated as it is right next to St Lukes Mall. After school here is crazytown and I do wonder if perhaps some parents use it as free after-school babysitting. Anyway, avoid avoid and come during school hours or even at the weekend. Outings to the library are a bit of a family tradition for us and even the child that’s not a big reader can find himself a graphic novel and a comfy seat. The staff here are so nice, especially considering how busy they get sometimes. It was here that I got my daughter her very own library card and the staff member who handled it was just lovely and made my girl feel very grown-up and special indeed. Auckland’s libraries are fantastic and this one is no exception.
