This is a frequent destination for our office for morning tea and lunch runs. The selection of food is always great and often you miss out on the amazing scones(must buy if you’re in the cheesy goodness mood). The staff are usually really friendly however like anyone have good and bad days. If you’re a regular they’ll remember your coffee orders and have a wee yarn to you. Like most cafés in Auckland they can be a bit abrupt if you’re a newbie. Only downside is I never remember my coffee card! Everyone loves a free coffee :)

WONDERFUL Food and Service! My husband and I both had lunch there yesterday. I had a spinach, mushroom and feta filo pastry thing and my husband had a panini with salami, feta, tomato etc in it. Both were wonderful. We also shared a ginger slice(made there) and it was also fantastic. Best part of the meal, was the coffee. It was overall a great experience.

Today I stopped into Mud Pie Deli with a group of friends; to be honest we only went there because the place across the road was closed and we were in a hurry to have coffee, then get our friends off to the airport. Since we were in a hurry we asked for our hot drinks to be takeaway, repeated several times, but unfortunately did not come out that way. Besides this, the service was friendly enough. The coffee’s were ok but a bit weak(and I don’t drink very strong coffee). My friend from Australia ordered a coconut muffin which he enjoyed thoroughly. Prices were above average for very standard hot drinks.

I always feel slightly stink when I leave Mud Pie Deli; not because their food is bad, because it’s not, it’s pretty good. I’ve only ever had sandwiches or cakes from the counter, but I don’t have any reason to expect that their cooked food is not good. They sell a «Mud Pie» chocolate thing, which is pretty great. So, the reason for my feelings, and the reason I don’t really go there anymore? The service is either totally uninterested(at best) or openly rude(at worst); I can’t think of another place where I’ve heard staff mockingly discuss another customer in front of me. I don’t think it’s too paranoid to think if they’re doing that about one customer, they’re happy to do it about any customer.

I kind of stumbled up Mud Pie when I was on my way through Point Chev and needed something to eat, fast. I pulled up outside and went in. first impressions were good. They have a huge cabinet packed with all sorts of food and an even bigger menu. I settled on the gluten free chocolate slice which was so scrummy. The place does look a little messy though. There are shelves behind the counter that are packed with old recipe books and all sorts of stuff that just looked a little cluttered. And also, the staff weren’t that friendly. The girl on the till was quite flat, not really how I like to have a good café visit but that’s ok. They do sell lots of other gourmetish produce which looked good.

I guess there’s not much to the neighbourhood of Pt Chevalier and Mud Pie Deli is about as good as it gets. It’s an enticing place, a nice spacious café with an attractive looking deli. The quality of the food is pretty good — I had a pasta here a while ago and it was very tasty. It was a big portion too which was good as I was starving that particular day. I’ve been here for brunch too and had the huevos rancheros(Spanish style eggs). They were good but not as good as the ones you get in Luscious Foods out west. If there is a criticism of Mud Pie Deli, it’s the staff are a bit indifferent. Perhaps it’s just me but each time I come here, they never seem to show me much love. If they were nicer, I’d come here more as the food is certainly good.

I was in the market for a pie(see my review of Angkor Bakery on the opposite side of Great North Road) when I went into this deli/café. After the disappointment of them not selling such things, my mood was immediately perked up when I noticed the coconut and passionfruit muffins on the counter and couldn’t resist buying one. So glad I did, the cake was delicious. Really moist with a passionfruit flavour icing running across the top and through the middle; absolute heaven. The other cakes and slices in the fridge looked just as good too, with favourites like cheesecake and carrot cake on offer. They also sell really nice looking quiche and lasagne slices for around $ 6.50 each for a massive slice and had my pie craving not been so strong, I’d have definitely been tempted by one of those too. I was really surprised to see how empty the café was on a Sunday afternoon as Mud Pie is definitely the nicest looking food place on this part of Great North Road and is really good value, with brunch options on the menu starting from around $ 9.
