We came here because another Indian(vegetarian) place around the corner that we had planned to go to was closed. Luckily, I didn’t check the Unilocal reviews before, because otherwise we might not have come here and that would have been a shame. I went with two friends who spent several months living in India, so they ordered food for the three of us and we shared. As they remembered several dishes they had enjoyed in India and not all of them were on the menu, they just talked to the guy at the counter who was really helpful and changed several menu items according to my friends’ wishes. All the food we had was really delicious, with a lot of flavour to it and reasonable portion sizes as well. Unfortunately, I do not remember the names of all the dishes we had, but it included the Maharaja Chaat platter(including Pani Puri) and Pav Bhaji which was my favourite. Two things we noticed: guests were mainly Indians(which, for us, was a good sign) and almost everyone seemed to order their Masala Dosa, which looked really great as well. Mumbai Chaat is more of a takeaway and snack place, so it does not look very inviting or comfy, but food is good so I’d definitely return if I lived in Auckland.

I don’t agree with the other reviews. This place rocks in a down to earth, good food kind of way. The food is fantastic. I’ve been coming here for awhile now, and still haven’t tried everything on the menu. The trick is not to expect Western restaurant service. If you engage with the father or son who always man the tills, you have a friendly helpful and informative time. It’s very clean and the food is very fresh. Many many Indian families come here. It has a clean family atmosphere. some may find the food a little oily. I don’t mind that. The chaat is tasty — for winter the samosa one is delicious. The dosa’s aren’t as crisp as other places, but the vegetable curries are very good. Maharaja thali is excellent. I also find it hard not to order idli sambar every time I go. Try beetroot or carrot halwa too. It’s gorgeous.

Food is generally ok, but if you’re not happy, the owner looses his cool, yelling and shouting, very shocking behavior! It’s a shame because we were not looking for a refund, just mentioned past takeaway was not so nice and asked him to keep an eye out on quality. But his rudeness will be the end of this place for myself and my family.

Food is okay but the customer service is terrible!!! The owner does not treat his customers well at all. Instead of listening to what the customer wants he would rather start an argument. I will not be returning here again.

I’ve been buying gulab jamuns here to take home. They have one of the better-tasting ones. especially compared to most Indian restaurants. Fresher, bigger, softer. You can fit 8 pieces in a plastic container($ 1.50 each piece). And last night, I tried their coconut burfi balls — yum, a new favourite. And my wife likes their carrot burfi — considering she’s comparing against fond memories of burfis past.
