If I had to choose one event as the most iconic kiwi experience you can get, it would have to be the Onetangi Beach Races. And unlike almost everything these days, it’s still free! How cool is that? The races are probably the most famous thing about the day, and include wheelbarrow, horse, and tractor races right on the beach. There’s also a tug of war contest, stalls, and a sandcastle building competition, the Big Dig treasure hunt, and the Mad Hatter’s tea party and parade. You really have to go to the Races to appreciate how wonderful they are. I’m not even much of the beach-goer but it was the best day out I’d had in ages. It’s a real family event and whether you want to get involved or just watch, it’s equally entertaining. Just don’t forget the camera and the sunscreen! Don’t miss out.
