If a slightly challenging but completely fun filled activity is what your looking for then ice skating is for you, avondale paradise ice skating is a great place to go with a few friends or for a date. If you’re a teenager and you want to meet some new people and have lots of fun you should definitely come here with some friends on fridays at 7:30pm — 10:30pm. The one flaw I would give this ice rink is that food service is painfully slow and just ordering some hot chips can be a frustrating task and ontop of that the normal ice skates that they rent out are for the most part quite dull and so are more difficult to skate with so make sure you pay a couple extra bucks for the upgraded skates.

Do something different — go iceskating with friends or a date. It was a rainy day so we decided we would go iceskating. It’s so much fun Paradise Ice Rink, 150 Lansford Crescent, Avondale. Hire skates for as little as $ 17 or you can pay an extra $ 4.50 to upgrade but I upgraded and I didn’t find these blades as comfortable so I swapped back and they happily refunded me. We went on a Sunday which meant it wasn’t too crowded. Hours go by without you even noticing. Modern music plays whilst you skate and the lights are low. Perfect for a birthday get together or a family day out.

The first time in my life that I have felt old is when I last visited Paradise Ice Ring. Not having been ice skating in well over a decade, there was a major discrepancy in what I thought I could do and the reality of my aging body. The hubristic attitude I held when I first hit the ice lasted all of 10 seconds. Ice is hard, far harder than my body it turns out. Nothing affirms the fragility of the human body more than a hard hitting encounter with a bed of ice. After a couple of bad bails I moved around that ring with an abandon of courage so high, that anyone watching me might have thought that my bones were made from glass. Little kids skating rings around me, laughing and smiling, encouraging me to go faster. I watched them carefully, terrified that I might collide into them and take another hard trip down. Not to say that there is anything wrong with this place. Ice skating just isn’t my thing.

Originally coming from a small town in Northland, one of the things I loved about going to the«big smoke» was the chance to go ice skating! It was such a novelty experience and still is for me, I really enjoy it. I went back recently on a Grab One voucher and I decided to be cheap and take the standard skates while my partner hired the premium skates. One word of advice, hire the premium skates! The standard skates are really uncomfortable and pretty old. I went back and paid extra for the premium skates after about 10 minutes on the ice. I agree with the previous reviewer on the food too… not the best and pretty expensive but I never went there for the food anyway.

Do 16 year old kids still go to Paradice on friday nights for illicit drinking and fumbled pashes? It’s a question I can’t answer(thanks to certain statues of law.) However, I can confirm that not a lot has changed at Paradice ice in the years following my first experience there. «Hot Chips» that go soggy within minutes, expensive drinks — but also cheap arcade games and, of course, the rink itself. What to say about it — it’s an ice rink, which is also used for Ice Hockey games. These are my favourite bit about Paradice, but unfortunately the season is very short — necessary considering there are only 6 teams in the New Zealand league. The local team is the West Auckland Admirals, a name which lends itself to some great chants. Try catch a game if you can once the league has started. Otherwise, a nice place to go for a date or something I guess.
