Freshly made on site ice cream & heaps of different flavours to choose from. Banana used to be my son’s favourite until he discovered his mad passion for chocolate.
Penguinos have a good menu offering shakes, sundaes & banana splits too. They also offer pint sized single scoop kiddie cones for the wee ones, or if you just feel like a tiny treat.
Cash or eftpos now available.

The perfect place to grab an ice cream if you are spending a summer afternoon in Browns Bay. After chilling on the beach for a couple of hours, watching the people come and go on the sand, this is the best place to cool down with an ice cream. The quality of the ice cream is really good and you can see why it’s a popular spot with the locals. I got a lemon sorbet here the last time I went and it was divine in the hot weather. Sitting there in the sun with my wife, it is times like this I am glad I decided to come live in New Zealand. If there is a criticism with this place, it’s that they had no eftpos for some reason or other. One perk of living here is that you don’t have to carry cash around and just about everywhere has eftpos these days. It’s not that it was a big inconvenience (we had cash) but I just found it surprising that a business in such a popular spot did not have it.

This is the cutest summery little ice cream café located on the beautiful Brown’s Bay beach. My friends and I always used to come here in the summertime, it was the perfect thing after tanning on the beach.
The only annoying thing about this place is that they don’t accept eftpos for some reason… super hipster of them.
There are so many flavours and they all look amazing so good luck deciding on a couple! But I can tell you that the stracciatella and the passionfruit sorbet are divine (separately of course, not together).
The last time I came here I saw a woman feeding her dog some ice cream and then licking the same cone. That was interesting.

Ice cream shops are always a winner for me! So there’s no way I could make an exception for Penguino. This place is great. Good flavours… great service. Even when they’re busy I think they do a pretty great job. I love the big folding windows where you can perch and look outside.
I know all ice cream shops are great for kids but this one has the added bonus of one of those creepy looking toy cars outside that kiddies can’t walk past without whining for. And super affordable tiny sized ice creams. Everything you need to keep the family occupied.
