Rock n roll playing and cheap beer usually a great combination unless the beer is boiling hot which was the case. NZ is famous by having awful food, Provedor is the apex. The Provedor’s nachos is the worst in the planet and probably the worst thing that I ever ate(tried to).

Provedor is all about location. It’s not groundbreakingly cool, it doesn’t do décor of any description, and I don’t suppose their music selection is particularly eclectic. But there aren’t many better waterfront spots in Auckland and it makes for a good place to enjoy a drink before setting sail for more interesting parts of the Auckland nightlife. The outdoor area has a sweet view of the ferry wharves, the passing crowds and the big cruise ships that frequently moor here. It’s even cheap for somewhere on the waterfront. My most interesting experience here was being approached one night by a young bloke who was either Irish, English, Australian or Kiwi(accent changed every few seconds) who was clearly fucked out of his mind and proceeded to have a lengthy rambling conversation with me about his opinions on the military. He subsequently went to hit on an elderly cruise ship passenger. What a character.

All my Auckland friends tell me I should be embarrassed that I like ‘the prov’, I in turn tell them that being from Christchurch is really a standard lowering precedent in terms of bars, in fact for a good year after the quake there were only a few serviceable ones around that you would do the rounds of, so it would seem that I have carried this idea of ‘it’s a bar, therefore it’s good’ into my new life up here. I’m just not one of the gals that buys into the whole pretentious bar scene that seems to be quite popular up here, everyone thinks they are cooler than they actually are. The prov has decent tunes, a well stocked bar, and a prime location right on the waterfront. During the week it’s actually a nice place to grab a quiet drink and chat with mates, and on the weekends it’s always pretty happening. It has a good buzz. While it does seem to attract more than its fair share of scantily dressed women, morally loose women, and women of questionable gender, I can’t judge it for that. Another round?

Prov was our primary after-work-drinks-location when I worked at the ferry company. In fact it always seemed to be full of staff from my work, mainly because it was so close and convenient to everyone that worked there. It’s a small place, is Provedor, but I guess the main attraction it has going for it is the fact that it’s right on the waterfront. Then again, so are most of the other bars around here so why is it so popular? Perhaps it is the cheap drink deals they have during happy hour and the like. Perhaps it’s the cheap food to go with the cheap drinks. Whatever it is, they do quite well for themselves here. Gets busy really quickly in the weekends, and its small size makes it worse. Good for after-dinner drinks but I wouldn’t go there on a night out.

This bar depends a lot on when you go, and who you are. Anytime other than a Weekend night, it’s quite pleasant. You can sit and have a drink and enjoy the waterfront location. The bar itself is nicely set up and not horrifically expensive, given where it is. However, late on a Friday or Saturday night, this place is pretty obnoxious. A meat market of short skirts and dressy shirts, with a higher fake-tan-to-life-ambition ratio than I’m really comfortable with. The bar’s small size works against it here, as everyone gets smooshed together into a sweaty reinactment of a Nelly video. But like I say, it depends who you are. If you like that sort of thing, then it’s probably a pretty good night out. And people must like it, because otherwise where would the crowd come from?

Provedor is a friendly bar just before the affected Auckland Waterfront. Sometimes it can get a little too friendly as other customers filter out of surrounding clubs and bars and into here, affectionately calling it Provide-a-Whore. But the little bar does a great job beside the harbour, even offering a cheap nibble and sneaky drink during a sunny afternoon. It uses it’s small space well, with a long central bar and a spacious brick courtyard. The small wood tables are great for a small group to comfortably sit around and enjoy a pint. Instead of trying to be everything to everyone, it offers good drinks specials and staff who are enjoying themselves.

Provedor is an average bar in a good location. This place is nicely situated right on Princes Wharf close to where the massive cruise ships often dock. There is nothing amazing about this bar, although it does have really cheap drink deals during its happy hour(s); $ 4 drinks from 3pm-7pm every day. On Friday and Saturday nights it seems to fill up quickly(like most bars around the waterfront area). The massive rectangular bar takes up most of the room in the centre, and it can be a bit of a squeeze inside the place. However, during the week, and especially in the early evenings, it’s generally a much quieter atmosphere.
