A discount store selling the obvious and all sorts of unusual stuff at bargain prices. They have a great selection of toys and in particular they stock this range of British Toys which are good quality and will probably last. We bought a fire engine for my nephew($ 25) and it’s his favourite toy — he never goes anywhere without it. They also do a lot of fancy dress which is handy if you have a party coming up — personally I haven’t been to a fancy dress party in years. They also stock Imperial Leather shower foam — no shower gel creates as much foam as this stuff and I used to always use it in the UK. You can’t really get it in New Zealand but we found a few bottles of it in Sunnys and bought the whole lot of them. A good discount store which is especially good for toys and better than the tat you get at the Warehouse and KMart.

Browns Bay is home to a one stop shop for gift wrap, ribbons, toys, gifts and almost anything. It is called Sunny’s and it is the big yellow store. Something between a two dollar store and the Warehouse; Sunny’s is great when you’re doing the gift circuit. My son isn’t even one yet, and already he’s been invited to 5 different birthday parties, and each one of the little lovelies need a gift wrapped prezzie, and everytime it needs to be something new, as it is always the same kids at each party. Sunny’s is also a good stop to get all those pesky items you need for fancy dress parties, they’ve got masks, boas, balloons, bunting and even general household items. Great for a browse, or if you want to treat the kids. The price is always right at Sunny’s, you don’t need to price check, you can just buy. And that is the real charm of the store.

I have great memories of swinging past Sunny’s in Whitianga on holiday to pick up a forgotten towel or toothbrush so I was delighted to find one in Browns Bay, just down the road from me. I love Sunny’s because it’s like a mini Warehouse, more like what it would’ve been like back in the day. It has toys, stationery, a few clothes, whatever they’ve been able to buy in bulk and for a bargain. The great thing about the store is they always have the staples that you need, but you’ll always find something different there that catches your eye and provides the perfect opportunity for an impulse buy. Sure, you may never use it, but at the time it was perfect and such a bargain. The location can get a little crazy as it’s right on the main road, but I suggest you park in the carpark behind Sunny’s. It provides a much saner way to get there.
