There is literally no sushi anywhere else in the world that is better than the sushi you can buy at Mercury Plaza. It’s freshly made, still warm, and you can put on your own Japanese mayo, ginger or wasabi, so you can have as much or as little as you like. It’s straight to the point– no extra ingredients– it’s just your choice of filling and avo, and it’s like 9 dollars. You really cannot go wrong. The bento boxes are equally as good– and there’s a constant battle of what to order. In the chicken one you get rice, teriyaki chicken, tempura veges, salad and chicken sushi. Amazing, and all for 13.50. You get a buzzer and you can go get a drink from the Asian Supermarket whilst you wait. The one thing about Mercs, is that it really doesn’t look like much. It really is just a run down international food court– and the first time I went I was quite worried! Once you taste the sushi you’ll understand though– it’s worth it!

It had been many years since I visited my old student food court of back in the day, but a friend visiting from out of town picked this venue and I was delighted. Feeling like Japanese I instantly headed to Sushi Bar Salmon which is nicely located right next to the entrance to Mercury Plaza. To choose my meal, all I needed to do was take a glance up above the counter and pictures of different meals and prices starred back. I decided on the Salmon Bento Lunch Box– delicious! My friends also ordered from Sushi Bar Salmon, and we all received electronic buzzers to call us back for our food. It being a very busy lunch hour and with seating spread out throughout the food court, we chose seats down the bottom level. After about 20 minutes my buzzer called me, and my friend’s partner kindly went to receive my meal. The food was really tasty and neatly presented in a cute Japanese food box laid out with deep fried veggies plus sauces and salad. Just fantastic and I paid much less than 15 dollars for it. I have to say being a Sushi Bar first timer; I was highly impressed with my meal.

Sushi Bar Salmon, more commonly known as the Japanese stall in the Mercury Plaza food court, produces consistently fresh and tasty sushi and Japanese cuisine. Everything is made fresh to order, and for the price it is extremely good value. I often place my order and then go and do some grocery shopping in the centre’s Asian supermarket while I wait. If you order a cooked meal(like their bento dinner boxes, $ 13.50 — very good) at a peak time you might have to wait a while. We last ate in on a Sunday night around 7pm and we had to wait almost half an hour. But once the food arrived it was all worth it — perfectly cooked teriyaki salmon, crunchy tempura veges and super fresh salmon rolls. For lunch, pick up a 9-piece rolled salmon sushi set for only $ 9 — you can’t get much better value than that in Auckland city.
