I’ve been to Thai Me Up many times over the last 8ish years, and it used to be a place friends would commonly venture too when going out for a ‘cheap’ dinner in our early 20s. The place and the food has not changed much over that time, and though it is reasonably good, tastey and fresh, it certainly isn’t mind blowing or even a considerable amount of food for the 14 – 17 $ you pay for mains. Perhaps my negativity is just I am SO over Thai food. It’s just so boring. The one interesting thing they do have going for them is how they choose to serve rice. Though most at the table got heart shaped piles, one member of our party for a man shaped pile of rice with carrot penis and matching pea balls. Certainly entertaining though a little questionable. Sadly I was unable to get an image

Visited Thai Me Up for a friend’s BYO birthday dinner. Fantastic location right on Ponsonby Road. Great little restaurant with very friendly staff. Absolutely perfect for a fun BYO dinner with friends. The menu is huge with lots of variety, offering entrees, soups, curries, wok dishes, noodles, rice dishes and lots of vegetarian options too! Meals were full of flavour and were exactly what you would expect of delicious Thai food, extremely tasty. Meals are very well priced too, a wonderful dining experience, would definitely return here in the future!

Cheap and cheerful Thai restaurant along Ponsonby strip. I wouldn’t go as far to say authentic, but the flavours are good. The ocean pearl tarakihi fillet with lime is full of bright zingy flavours. Totally didn’t expect the decorated rice(see pic). An easy choice for an affordable dinner, added bonus of being byo.

We got takeaways from here, so my review only concerns the food itself. Friends raved about the authentic thai taste of Thai Me Up, but we found it to be very basic. The Satay was so overcooked it had the consistency of rubber. My husband’s red curry was bland. I had the Pad Thai and the flavor was acceptable but not great. I asked to substitute crispy pork as the meat choice but instead of crispy pork belly(which is what i have always been served in thai restaurants) I received breaded and fried pork. Nothing crispy about it. If you want great tasting thai, skip this place.

Cheap, friendly, and no fuss Thai food. Thai Me Up is unapologetically unpretentious. Meals are excellent for the price.

Great Thai food at a great price. Whole snapper brilliant. Service and staff great. Nothing pretentious. A local favorite where you get remembered by the staff. Highly recommended.

To me, Thai is hard to fuck up. I’ve never really had a terrible experience at a Thai restaurant. Thai Me Up is your above average BYO. There must be a tonne around the place but it seems to be more popular than most. The prices are great and the location is good. The parking is Ponsonby — not that bad in my experience, but on the occasion very infuriating. Good for groups.

Located on Ponsonby Road and open seven days a week, Thai Me Up is a classic, reasonably priced and convenient place to dine. With plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, Thai Me Up is ideal for an intimate meal or a group event and the polite and friendly staff are only too happy to accommodate. Though it serves good food and does decent portions, what really sets Thai Me Up above other local Thai restaurants is their insane lunch deal. For only $ 14.90 you can get an entrée, a main, a side salad AND a glass of wine or beer. Talk about a good time! Bonus: Unlike some Thai restaurants, Thai Me Up manages to display traditional artwork, gold trimming and play traditional Thai music without coming across as over the top.

When you get your dinner for $ 14 on a restaurant on Ponsonby Rd, and you can take your own wine along, I’d call that a bargain. And the food at Thai Me Up is delicious. Well the Lucky Jack and Thai Princess are, as I’ve stuck to the clear winners and found no need for variation. I find the small but simple restaurant layout charming, it’s clean and has some authentic touches that give it a bit of character. Sitting outdoors is also nice in summer. Great for takeways, group dinners, friendly catch-ups, probably anything except a romantic night out where you might like a bit more sophistication, or if you don’t then it’s probably great for date night as well.

Thai food is my favourite and I have been fortunate to try quite a few in my time. This one was recommended by a workmate — so it has fans — it just didn’t quite do it for me in terms of the food. The service was lovely and accommodating when needed, I had unexpected workmates turn up for my farewell dinner on a summer Sunday evening. Thai Me Up also boasts to be the cheapest Thai restaurant in Ponsonby, which can obviously be a draw card for people. Parking here, as with anywhere in this trendy suburb, usually means a leisurely stroll down the road, so be prepared if it is raining out.

Thai Me Up is one of the most inexpensive Thai restaurants I’ve some across in Auckland. Its a very small dining space that manages to fit quite a few people and the food is prepared very quickly. The portions aren’t huge, which is common with Thai food and expected at their low prices, but they do it very well. Their angel wings and prawn crackers taste so good, especially after a couple of drinks. Their menu is quite extensive with a lot of curry and wok options, although I’m hoping they add to the fried rice section of their menu at some point. Vegetarian options are also available and are just as delicious as the regular mains. If you’re not from the area, it may not be worth a drive longer than about 15 minutes, and Ponsonby parking can be terrible, but if you’re after a cheap dinner and great flavours and good service, Thai Me Up is worth a look.
