$ 1 for a large piece of sushi allows you to try anything! Sashimi is amazing and fresh. Highly recommend?

this is currently my go-to«grab and go» CBD lunch spot. i mean, can one realllly go wrong with $ 1 rolls brimming with varieties such as basic salmon/avocado all the way to fragrant red rice and spinach tofu tempura? .didn’t think so. PLUS everything’s on display like a miniature jewelry store. asian’s just can’t help but be cute, can they?! caveat, however, to my «5 minute lunch break» types: queues are pretty standard here(and it doesn’t help that the line system is er, crap? … basically you stand awkwardly with tongs as you shuffle past the delicately placed«fancy sushi» until arriving at the $ 1 standard versions where the rest of the world is clustering). but whatever, the sushi is worth the wait. don’t forget your wasabi!

I’m such a big fan of Umi sushi in the Atrium on Elliot that when another opened up I was pretty stoked. If you’ve been to Umi sushi it’s pretty much the same deal, Japanese morsels like tempura, sushi and their famous honey rice balls… YUM. And you really can’t beat $ 1 pieces of sushi although I do like to branch out and buy their more exotic varieties such as eel and caviar which inevitably comes with a higher price. I’m not sure if they have as large of a selection as Umi sushi but definitely worth going to if it’s closer or you don’t want to brave the line at the Atrium!

The sign proclaiming 1 dollar pieces of Sushi was all I needed as encouragement to come and try Umiya. For once, the sign didn’t serve as an advertisement for low quality — usually when Sushi is a dollar, it’s a piece of tuna and some mayo wrapped in stale sea weed and cut extremely thin. Not so with Umiya. Every piece of Sushi is actually a dollar, and there is a wide range of flavors — its impossible to pick my favorite. They also have a lot of deep fried vegetables, edamame, miso soup, tea eggs… all the good stuff. They have a great range of sauce — which is something I always find lacking at sushi places. No extra charge for wasabi or ginger makes this the best sushi place in the central CBD. It’s quite nice to sit outside and people watch, or just to get takeaway and walk up to Albert Park.

Here is where Mr Sushi and his friends hang out — and introduce themselves to you as you eat them. By which I mean, each pick-it-yourself morsel has a cute little tag saying something along the lines of «I am delicious Japanese shrimp cake», or «Hello my name is healthy rice ball». It’s so adorable. Umiya has a full range of the standard rolled sushi, as well as some with crunchy, delicious ‘tempura-ed’ fillings, plus interesting hot things on sticks, marinated hardboiled eggs, tempura you can buy by the chunk… there’s a great variety. Dine-in or take-away, it’s good cheap lunch with something to suit most.
