This is your typical bakery serving hot pies and sweet treats and soft warm breads. It’s run by a nice Asian family who will greet you hello with a big smile and wait patiently as you decide what kind of pie, what kind of cookie and what kind of drink you are going for. They’ll leave you to it; they’re not going to spark up and full on conversation and ask you about your day, they will just smile cheesily at you and laugh awkwardly at anything you say, which is totally fine by me. They’ve got a great drinks fridge, and they always have heaps on offer. They don’t have the best chicken pies, but their muffins are nice and they make good sandwiches.

The Westside Bakery is not a place were you are accosted by staff throwing down obscure, gang-related hand gestures. It’s not where rappers stock up on muffins before«doing a drive-by»(although presumably they must get muffins somewhere). No, Westside Bakery is just a bakery on the west side and self-proclaimed«Lunche Bar» run by a polite Asian couple. The food is catered to truck drivers and road workers and manly men made of steel and brawn. Fried things and pastried things and really good pies and humble filled rolls that are being phased out of Auckland by a fancy Panini Revolution. A fine place to pick up a cheap lunch on the go.
