After the Manchester lamb and the mixed veggie dish, it’s difficult to give less than 5 star. Normally the highest I go is 4 star, in case there is some other place that is even better. But this time my taste buds are demanding I give 5. Maybe it was the paratha that makes this place a more confident 5 or maybe it was the desert: a hot honey ball + ice cream…

Since the earthquakes destroyed much of Chchch, the B. Tree has moved to 397⁄399 Ilam Road; not too far from the U of Canterbury, but hidden away behind a realtor’s offices. The service is attentive and gracious. i arrived just after six, early enough for a table in a place that is usually booked up tight — they were happy to seat me, however, a bit of luck on a wet early summer’s night. the green papaya salad arrived in just a few minutes, lovely to look at and fragrant with crispy onion threads as a garnish. delish. the deep fried veges were tasty, with a gently spicy dipping sauce. the batter, however, was ordinary(my only criticism). all in all, a greatly appreciated and very different variation on the usual Asian fare. this makes a unique contribution here, very welcome after so much horror and misery…

The food was good especially the tea salad and fish soup. The curries were interesting but the tapas style quantities and prices were on the high side. I think it was bit overpriced. Overall the service was decent.

Excellent food, great if you want to try lots of different flavours. 2 items per person would suit for a main, we were 4 so got to try lots of dishes! Tamarind sorbet was yummy for dessert, also good shared as its quite sweet
