Our visit to Le Café was interesting, if not for the fact we had, minutes prior, stormed out of Café Cortado. We had looked at the menu earlier in the evening but decided against it however, hungry and annoyed, we returned to finish the meal we had started in the earlier restaurant. So, we had a great experience here, but it’s hard to tell how much of that was a backlash against our dining experience at Cortado. We chose to stay for a main course — the SR opted for goat curry(a personal favourite of his), and I was left pondering over abalone when the waitress apologised and noted that the abalone was off menu. I was so fed up at that point, I asked just for the plain lemon risotto, the fish could be forgotten. Instead, she suggested to swap to an alternate fish and she would persuade the kitchen to do so. She never returned, but instead, our dishes turned up, and she appeared later to check we were happy with our options and was proud of the fact she sorted out my meal. When our drinks were forgotten, the waiter apologised profusely and brought them out minutes later. Overall, my meal was lovely, served with Waireku. The SR enjoyed his goat curry equally, and we returned home, much more content than we thought we would be. Le Café fixed a bad experience for us, and for that, we are grateful.

If you’re in Picton and looking for your usual breakfast favorites with a great view, then Le Café is a great choice. Be aware that prices are pretty high. I ordered eggs and bacon on toast with a cup of chai, and it ended up being about $ 16. Good service and views but only come here if you are NOT on a backpacker’s budget or wanting to save some money! It is right on the harbour so excellent views!

I only had 1 thing of their menu. which was their toasties. but it was so good I had to come the next day to have another. the toasties were 2 pieces of multigrain bread. browned with a bit of cheese and butter I think. for 7.50, you get a choice of 2 fixings, additional fixings cost only 50¢. and you have a choice of egg, cheese, ham, bacon, onions, mushroom and salami. I had one with egg, cheese, ham and mushrooms. the portions were generous but not excessive, so no worries about anything falling out as you eat it. little or no seasoning was added so it wasn’t too salty. the toastie is really a simple dish. but to be able to elevate it above any normal sandwich probably requires some skill. I would love to come back and try their other dishes.
