Wellington Zoo

What a letdown! I don’t know if I should have expected more in the capital city of New Zealand, but this was small, and only a few animals exhibits and settings.
The layout is easy, as one takes a circular path throughout and around the zoo. There is a café on site, and a few picnic tables with covering.
If you’ve been to zoos elsewhere, you can give this a pass.

Wellington zoo is small but spectacular.
There’s been a tonne of renovations in the last few years. The renovations have really done it justice.
I went with my dad, partner, my 3 year old sister and 1.5 year old brother. There was so much for everyone. If you’re tech savy download the zoo story app before you arrive, it allows you to scan codes at each exhibit and you can view information fun and pictorially (I enjoyed it) also you are on Unilocal so you can’t be that bad at technology. The price was pretty cheap to get in $ 16 for a student $ 20 for an adult which is reasonable compared to a lot of zoos around the world.
The enclosures are spacious and designed in such a way that you can both see the animals and also your heart doesn’t ache for them.
New features include the animal hospital within the zoo, where often they’ll allow people to watch on and do educational things for schools. They also have an extra eating area in the old elephant house, as Wellington can no longer house a single elephant and I applaud this decision as they get really lonely.
Another nifty quality wellington Zoo is carbon neutral and big on teaching others about conservation for both animals and humans.
Don’t miss the keeper talks the keepers are knowledge and happy to answer all your burning questions about things such as why do chimp throw feaces?
You may get to feed the giraffes, watch the Lions eat goat meat, the birds being fed or hear about the sunbears rescued from restaurants in Cambodia.
I really enjoyed my trip as did everyone in my group, Wellington zoo really is aimed at all audiences.
One negative is the coffee really wasn’t that good. But if you’re going to the zoo specifically for coffee you’re a bit silly really anyways. So five stars stay strong.
