I should explain to English speakers that ‘buurtcafé’ was incorrectly translated into ‘dive bar’ at the heading of this listing. It’s more like a local café. This wonderful stop is NOT a dive bar!( ) With no help from a tour book, we chanced upon this gem. It’s a spot I would be thrilled to return to at a future date. What a pleasant surprise! The bar is quaint and attractive with amusing and antique signs tacked up in different languages. The locals pile up at the bar and converse with the bartender. Tourists(myself included) stumble in and orient themselves before finding a perch at one of the dining tables. The dining tables are worn wood tables with traditional decorative rugs(taffelkleeden), like you would see at your Dutch grandma’s house. I’m not usually a beer drinker, but when in Amsterdam… So I enjoyed the Herfst Bok. To eat, I ordered the cheese tosti with a cup of vegetable soup. The soup had clearly been prepared that day with fresh ingredients. It was great and perfect for the recent December in which it was consumed. The tosti was a tosti, but what more do you expect? ;o) Definitely visit this establishment. If you’re planning a trip, you can take advantage of its location in relation to the Anne Frank Huis.
