Café van Zuylen

Das Café sah gut aus, wir wollten aber etwas essen. Außen stand Steak, Burger und co. auf einer Karte.
Der Preis für einen Burger lag bei knapp über 15 € was uns mehr als teuer erschien. Nach einem kurzen Besuch auf der Toilette (wo ein Blick in die Küche möglich war) haben wir dann doch nur bei Getränken belassen.
Wenn die Hygiene in der Küche fragwürdig ist mache ich doch besser die Tür zu. Schade aber das Bier war gut.
Die Bedienung war bemüht hat aber eher gelangweilt gewirkt und war von unserer Bestellung offensichtlich enttäuscht.
Fazit: viel zu teuer und die Qualität ist zweifelhaft

Mediocre food — just barely. Friendly staff, but they screwed up an order for a friend who has a life-​threatening food allergy, after she specifically told them about it. It took four times as long to remake her sandwich. I had long since finished mine. Tried to find the cat, but, alas, she was nowhere to be seen. That might have made our visit here more memorable.

A local dutch restaurant with limited international offers. I love their kip sate, delicious chicken stews with asian nuts sauce! Yummy.
Service is not the best, be prepared to wait if you go at busy hours.

At night it’s a cozy small pub on the Singel. They’ve got a nice selection of beers on tap and the bartender is friendly. It’s a popular bar one minute then the next it’s empty until the next wave of people arrives. They have a very large outdoor seating area. During the day when the sun is out it’s very busy. Their menu isn’t extensive but they do have some nice things on it. I wouldn’t go here specifically to eat though more or less to hang out have a beer or three and then maybe something to eat. Lunch is okay. I’ve no idea what dinner is like. The service outside isn’t so great but my expectations were low so I wasn’t all too surprised but grateful when my drink or food finally arrived.

Van Zuylen fut notre premier petit-​déjeuner à Amsterdam, le premier café où nous sommes rentrés, par hasard, en nous dirigeant vers la place du Dam. Et nous n’avons pas été déçus ! Cet endroit a été un véritable avant-​goût du style Amstellodamois, une invitation à l’évasion dans un univers rempli d’histoire; les murs encore jaunis par la cigarette, le bar en vieux bois, les bougies aux tables, et la gentillesse du service nous ont prédit un agréable séjour dans cette belle ville.
Nous avions tous deux commandé un petit déjeuner — pour ma part, j’ai choisi un chocolat chaud avec de la crème, un croissant au chocolat. Le chocolat chaud était un délice (à Amsterdam, il est presque toujours servi dans un verre, et la crème à côté), mais j’ai été un peu déçue par le croissant, surgelé…
Malgré tout, ce petit café brun typique vaut le détour, éloigné de la foule touristique, il a su garder sa magie !

Lovely bar near the canal. Came across this place whilst looking for somewhere to eat breakfast on Sunday. Staff were really friendly and suggested a place to hire bikes which were cheaper than the tourist ones. The staff were really attentive and the food came out within 15 minutes, all four of us loved our meals and would definitely recommend it for a bite to eat.

I came here not for food of tummy but food for thought haha aka brought my laptop to study with some lovely Amsterdam coffee. I was happy with my coffee, and am warmed by the fact that in Amsterdam, coffee seems to always come with a little midget cookie. I’m told that you’re supposed to drop it on top of the foam to test the quality. If the cookie sinks, then it stinks. If not, then awesome! Mine… Kinda sunk. But maybe I dropped it too hard? Lol in any case, the atmosphere was cozy enough for study and relaxation and our waiter was definitely easy on the eyes and service.

A pretty standard brown bar along the canals. We came upon this place barhopping one night to enjoy a few more drinks (genever and beer). Great vibe but we noticed the prices were a bit more expensive than some of the nearby areas of similar category – and I can’t exactly figure out why. Service was a bit inattentive which was a bit irritating, but it was easy to have a conversation with the low key, almost divey atmosphere. I’m not disappointed that I came here, but I can’t imagine making a point to come back.

Great location along the canal. Perfect on a sunny day. Nothing super special about it but if I can sit outside and sip cold beer I’m happy.

It’s a fine, little pub. Nothing outstanding about it, the service is average but the sound level is good. Even with A full bar, you can have a quiet conversation without problem. It’s nice but would I come back? Not necessarily…

You’re walking along the canals admiring the cute shops alongside the arbor lined canals wondering if life could be more gezellig.
In order to take in this gezelligness, you decide to stop by one of the many cafes along the canals to enjoy some sun and people watching.
Hmmmm… Where to go? Where to go?
So many choices… Well let me tell you folks…
Don’t go to Café van Zuylen!!!
Yes, they have tons of seats ready to haul in innocent passerbyers with the hopes of enjoying a nice table next to the canal only to shatter your dreams and euphoric feelings caused by, up to this time, a cozy stroll in the area. While sitting there waiting for someone to come to your table, you start to think of different ways of getting the wait staff’s attention. Back flips? Megaphone??? Confetti cannons???
If you are successful in finding someone to take your order, then comes the wait for what you actually ordered! Once it comes out, you will be forced to wonder why you ordered a toasti that looks like stale bread slices with a misaligned piece of cheese that is semi-​toasted. (and I mean that in the glass half empty kind of way) Now comes the wait for the bill, if you are able to flag someone down…
So I think you get my point here. This place has a great corner location along the canal, but it can soon turn a magical morning/​afternoon into a poopy one leaving you only with thoughts of going to the nearest pub to hastily chug a bottle of Duvel!

Hier wurden wir einfach nicht bedient, obwohl mehrmals darauf aufmerksam gemacht wurde. Dann eben nicht. –5 Sterne wenn es möglich wäre.

Bei schönem Wetter kann man hier sehr schön draußen sitzen. Merkwürdig ist nur, dass man bei der Bestellung bezahlen muss, bevor man die Getränke bekommt.
Ansonsten aber sehr schön und auch preislich ist es für Amsterdam noch im Rahmen

Nettes kleines Café, sehr gesellig und urig. Zwei Cappuccino kamen sofort und waren preislich ok. Bedienung lässt etwas auf sich warten, ist aber freundlich. Toilettenzustand leider inakzeptabel, unsauber und riechend!

If I ever find myself in tourist central and need a break, I take the two block trek to this spot. Nice brown bar with strong beer.

Van Zuylen is ok… maar wat mij betreft, ook niet meer dan dat.
De bediening is niet heel erg alert en vinden elkaar soms interessanter dan het helpen van gasten.
Het eten is prima, maar sommige gerechten (zoals de club sandwich en de broodjes) zijn wel een beetje weinig voor dat wat je krijgt…
De dagsoep is vaak wél goed, zoals de pompoensoep en de courgettesoep.
De koffie is niet echt goed (horeca-​machine-​werk, knopje drukken en gaan, je kent die machines wel).
Dus al met al: medium

Nothing special about this place in terms of offering: standard drinks and hapjes. But the big plus is the terrace, in the sun for most of the day!
Great spot. The staff depends on the day. some days very nice, and the other days …

Just another pub, not much else to say. Plenty of outdoor seating. Average prices.

Das Café hat einen großen, sonnigen Außenbereich auf einer Brücke über dem Singel. Das Speisenangebot reicht von Frühstück bis Abendessen und alles, was ich dort gesehen habe, sah sehr gut aus. Das Preis-​Leistungs-​Verhältnis scheint auch angemessen zu sein. Der Platz ist sehr belebt und läd zum Verweilen ein.
