We went to Porto to try Port… I mean that makes sense right! What doesn’t make sense is that all the Port cellars are actually in a different town across the river! CRAZY Luckily its walking distance, or cheap cab distance. We chose to go to Ferreia as one of our cellar tours because it was one of the only completely Portuguese owned complains. Many of the other port companies are British owned, nothing wrong with that but we just wanted to see if it was different. The tour guide was great! We had been on a port tour the day before and expected to hear much of the same information, but to our surprise we got more history and understanding of the different grades of port. It was really educational! Plus the cellar is really cool! It was a great port tour and had very tasty port! We even bought a few bottles to bring home. One from the cellar, one from a shop and the other two from duty free. Duty free was actually the cheapest! Fantastic tour, great port! We are big fans of Ferreira now! =) Oh we bought our tickets from the Tourist Information centre. But I think you can get them other places too. just book in advance if you want an English tour!

Visiting(at least) one wine cave is a MUST. Guided visit to Ferreira was interesting, we were told a history of Porto wine and Ferreira wine house. The visit finished with tasting of two types of Porto wine — white and red. Worth visiting.

I just did the tasting and had a few interesting Ports. The first was the Lágrima which was super sugary as the server had warned me. Too much for me, but I was impressed that they attempted such a thing, someone somewhere will like that and then maybe get diabetes. After that I had the reserve white which was better for my palette and probably my favorite white Port that I tasted in the area. But then the 20 year old tawny port just blew everything else away. So. So. Good.

I booked a river cruise and port wine tasting through the cruise ship I was on and I was really looking forward to visiting a port winery. Ferreira did not disappoint in the least. From the outside it is very unassuming but once you enter you can explore their vast hallways of huge barrels and history of wine making. After the tour we were able to go to their modern tasting room/shop and sample a red and a white port. Both were tasty and I decided to buy a few bottles to bring home. Our guide spoke great english and was well versed in everything to do with port wine making. What is really crazy is they actually have bottles of 1815 port wine for sale. It will set you back 1500 euro though.
