Great place and remarkable work done by this non profit organization I have volunteered for them in the past and the feeling you get from helping homeless cats is just amazing. If you are interested just contact them and volunteer you wont regret it. Also you can stop by an adopt a cat.

This is a wonderful non-profit organization in San Juan that basically manages the hundreds of cats that live around the city but primarily in Old San Juan. One of the best attractions in Old San Juan is the walk outside the wall and along the water where the majority of the cats live. You get to see many cats and quite a few are very friendly and want attention of course. Save a Gato handles adoptions but also it’s just looking after the cats so that they’re fed and taken care of, at least as much as possible.

TNR is the effective and humane way to stabilize community cat populations and that is one of the things Save a Gato does. My husband and I were on a Royal Caribbean cruise and San Juan, PR was one of our ports of call. I contacted SAG in advance and set up a visit. One of their dedicated volunteers met us at the port and spent several hours with us. She walked us around the city and showed us a couple of the established community cat colonies and also took us to their shelter for a tour. They are doing so much good for the cats of Old San Juan with so little resources. SAG practices TNR [trap, neuter, return] which an alternative to catch and kill. I left San Juan inspired to do more for the animals in my community.

Wonderful organization right by El Murro. Run by volunteers whose passion for the welfare of the animals really shows. The casita is not fancy but it is clean and all of the kittens/cats look well cared for — some of the older cats at the casita are strays that are sick/injured and SaveAGato is looking after them until they are healthy and can be released back into the paseo. Wonderful place and hoping all these kittens and cats find loving homes :) Donation can be made on-line through PayPal.

So there we were in Old Town San Juan at Paseo Del Morro, just walking around. But what’s up with all these cats? As we approached a pink building, there were cats everywhere. As we learned, this is the shelter for Save A Gato, an organization that feeds and does health care for the huge population of cats in Old San Juan. Run by volunteers. «Gato» of course is the Spanish word for cat. We went inside and checked it out. Lots of cats in cages.
They take donations thru their website for those so inclined.
