Spicy Caribbee is a really nice little boutique type of a spice store where the staff is more than willing to give you all kinds of hints to spice up your cooking. They carry various spice creations of their own along with various sauces such as a Creole Green, Island Thyme, a Passionfruit Pepper, Saucy Tamarind, rubs, honeys, soaps and fragrances. As I wanted to prepare a dish of snapper nuggets from a recipe and preparation technique as was related to me by Chef Carmine of St. Kitts, I stopped by to purchase some Lime Orange Pepper; something I haven’t been able to find stateside. And though I may be showing my culinary bias, I think mine came out not better, but every bit the equal of hers. I also purchased some banana ketchup, common to the islands but not so commonly found stateside as I’ve found it works really well, better than tomato ketchup, in preparing various tasty and unique dips. If you’re interested in spices or doing some cooking with a Caribbean flare, Spicy Caribbee is a good place to shop.

Incredibly authentic gifts. My boyfriend has purchased their hot sauces before but this as my first time in the shop. Wide range of unique hot sauces that you can taste before purchasing. Ended up purchasing a few as gifts as well as their premade coquito. I believe you can also purchase online if you need to restock on any of the items that you really like

The shops are identical in offerings for both Old San Juan & the Tortola location. The Old San Juan location lacked in local color, but, was nicer. This is a nice stop in Tortola for a little shopping in a quaint setting. The selections were very good and we enjoyed our brief visit while on a brief cruise ship stop. One negative note: We stopped in the very same shop while in Old San Juan. There were numerous samples in the San Juan shop to try before you make your purchases. The lack of a sample selection in the Tortola shop made it very difficult for us to decide if we wanted to make additional purchases. Therefore, we made none at this location

Spicy Caribbee has a great selection and variety of hot sauces. The best part is that they have a sampling station. There are no surprises with the hot sauces you are buying! There’s a sauce for everyone. I love the fuego and green heat flavors. Definitely check them out!

This shop had the most authentic gifts in the area, in my opinion(keep in mind this is tourist central so modify your expectations accordingly). I asked for the«most puerto rican» flavor and the staff was quick to point out a steak seasoning that I immediately loved. Camila is a great employee, very friendly and knowledgeable. Definitely recommend this spot for fun gifts to bring back home.

Bottom line: decent selection of what they say they sell, helpful and friendly staff, touristy prices I’m a huge fan of spices, coffee, and tea, so I knew I wanted to check this place out. The sales person was particularly helpful and friendly, and I purchased a small bag of tea and a bag of coffee beans. I had hoped to find a few particularly hard-to-find spices, but I had no luck. They have a decent selection of bulk spices, which will be impressive if you are used to only a grocery store selection. I live next to a Penzey’s spice store, which has a larger selection and better prices. Their selection of sauces and packaged products seems great, but it wasn’t what I was looking for. Their products certainly seem to be popular, given that they were also sold in the shop at the resort I was staying at. There are samples of a few of the sauces. They have a small selection of bulk teas, mostly flavored black teas. I bought a small amount of the orange spice, a flavored black tea. It is nice, but wasn’t particularly cheap. It is nice to be able to see and smell the teas before buying. Finally, they had a few different types of coffee beans. It was a bit more expensive than the coffee I typically buy at home, but that is what I expected. I’ve brewed the coffee, and it is ok. Nothing spectacular.

I had bookmarked Spicy Caribee weeks before my trip to San Juan after reading all the positive reviews. However, as nice as the shop was, I found the selections to be a little touristy and the prices a tad steep. Spicy Caribee however, is still a lovely little shop. You can get all sorts of stuff here from hot sauces, spice mixes, and and even unique folk-style souvenirs. I myself, was drawn to their exotic sugar blends and island-style vanilla extracts. However, ultimately, I left without anything more than a plush coqui frog from my niece, as I knew I could find other less expensive(and more authentic) sauces and spices at the local markets(which I did). Spicy Caribee just felt a little too streamlined for me(since you can even order their stuff online) and the clean and air conditioned store just didn’t feel like a place one visits to stock their kitchen pantry.

A wonderful spot with great spices. All of the sauces were laid out for us to try beforehand. The customer service was amazing. I can’t think of one negative, we were all smiles. Thanks again for the great sauces!

Very friendly and welcoming staff. The store smells amazing, with all the spices. They have coffee, sauces, chutney, jam, spices(including bulk), and some miscellaneous items(shirts, etc) at the back. Great place to get some gifts that aren’t the typical tourist fare, and that will actually get used! If you are having trouble finding a gift for someone back home, I’ll bet you could find something here that would work!

I knew even before coming to Puerto Rico that I would stop at that place. Tee-hee…thanks Unilocal! To be totally honest I would have found the place anyway. You cannot miss it when you wander in the streets of Old San Juan: it’s just steps away from El Convento and the cathedral. The best part? being welcomed by the intoxicating smells of spices. So potent, rich and complex that it gave me the same tongue-titillating feeling that I get from the taste of vinegar: it makes my mouth water. Love at first smell. And I found indeed enough to entertain my taste buds for a while. The choice of sauces is overwhelming but you will be guided in your choice by a free tasting on crackers. Feel free to try whatever you want, even twice if you are indecisive, no one will care. There is something for everyone. If condiments are not your thing, settle for exotic jams(mango, guava and such) or coffee(mmmmmm!) or even housewares like towels, cups, utensils and baby goats. Prices between $ 10 and $ 15.
