I normally like Gâteau. The baked goods are tasty and the coffee is good as well. This time around, however, my first time at this location, I did not have a good experience. To be fair, the place was overloaded with visitors seeking coffee from the Stockholm Tech Fest nearby. Perhaps they do not normally have quite the rush. But that doesn’t change the fact that the service was bad. The tiny little café is tidy, clean, and attractive, which is good. The girl behind the counter seemed nice enough. I ordered a café latte with almond milk, which costs 3kr extra. Nearly ten minutes later they finally got around to actually making the latte — and informed me that they were out of almond milk. They asked if normal milk or soy milk would be okay. Well, I wanted my latte, so I said yes — and didn’t point out that I had already paid, ten minutes ago, for the more expensive version. Since we had already been there so long it didn’t seem worth making a fuss. But they didn’t seem particularly apologetic. Four minutes later I finally got the latte, which was, well, a normal latte. Absolutely nothing special about it. I think we would have been better off going to Pressbyrån — the coffee is actually just fine and the wait wouldn’t have been as long. Plus, you always know what you can get.

Gâteau Stockholm Est.1937 is a small bakery chain in Stockholm. This location at the Central Station(T-Centralen) is quite convenient if you’re a tourist staying in the area – or if you need an afternoon sweet fix. The store is compact but has a lot of variety – essentially every bun and Swedish treat your heart desires. It is here that I first tried Swedish butter buns, and cardamon buns – and subsequently became addicted. The smell is truly intoxicating. What diet say you? You can really taste the freshness and quality. They’re always fresh and never disappoint. I stopped by every morning and got myself a bag of these buns! Simply divine.
