Restaurant Steinbock

Went there for a team dinner. Some of the appetizers were overpriced compared to the portions. The main course took a long time to arrive. The Älplermakkaronen didn’t have any potatoes in the them (tourist wouldn’t know that this is wrong — they looked simply like Mac and Cheese actually). My food was pork and Rösti were the meat was overcooked and chewy, the latter bland.
After a question about an item on the check which was put on a different guests bill the waiter/​owner quickly had an attitude. Under protest he offered to remove it off the bill completely.
Not very professional and not impressed by the food made this less than a pleasant experience.

Excellent meal. Had everything Swiss. Spatzle, weinerschitzle and cheese fondue. All wonderfully prepared.

Zur Vorspeise Crevetten-​Cocktail bzw. gemischter Salat.
Erst halb fertig, kommen schon die Hauptgerichte.
Als fertig, bleiben Teller und Schale von der Vorspeise relativ lang stehn.
Hauptgang: Rinds-​Leberli mit Rösti
Leber etwas trocken, wenig Soße
Rösti hätte krosser sein können

I enjoyed my meal tonight at the Steinbock. A British ex-​pat recommended it as a place to go for authentic Swiss food that isn’t touristy. Even though it is a half a block from the Basel train station, there seemed to be many regulars and locals.
The waiter was nice — saw me struggling with my poor German and helped me out with English. I had a nice simple green salad and the Steinbock rosti — potatoes, onions and pork filets, with cheese grilled on top. Tasty and filling. Also had a really nice white wine… What amounted to a half bottle. All that for $ 45 CHF — quite reasonable for me, coming from San Francisco.
Ambiance was nice and warm and welcoming. Wood panels and wooden tables.
I am going to come back to have the fondue!

Gute und abwechslungsreiche Küche für zu schweizer Verhältnissen günstigen Preisen (ausser für Getränke). Einige warme Gerichte sind auch ausserhalb der normalen Essenszeiten verfügbar.

Uns hat es als Touristen in Basel in das Gasthaus STEINBOCK verschlagen und wir waren von der Atmosphäre angenehm überrascht. Es ist muggelig, mit vielen alten Holzvertäfelungen, ein ordentliches traditionelles Gasthaus, hat aber auch eine sehr gute Küche.
Wir haben uns für klassische Rösti mit Fleisch entschieden und wurden nicht enttäuscht. Auch das am Nebentisch zubereitete Fondue für eine Gruppe hat einen wunderbaren Eindruck gemacht.
Für die Toiletten gibt es Sterneabzug, die haben schon bessere Zeiten gesehen.
Zwar waren wir bei unserem Besuch mit dem Auto vor Ort (Parkmöglichkeiten auf der Straße vorhanden), aber das Steinbock liegt auch günstig für den öffentlichen Nahverkehr direkt an der Bahn.
