This castle is located in the quaint Swiss village of Grandson next to Yverdon-Les-Bains. We enjoyed a nice walk along Lake Neuchatel from the Yverdon-Les-Bains to Grandson(approx. 1 hr in duration). Grandson castle dates back to between the 11th and 14th centuries and is not as impressive as Gruyère or Chillon, but holds it own. The castle is currently being renovated on the outside, so some scaffolding is up, but you are still able to tour the inside. I wasn’t expecting much from this castle museum, but I was pleasantly surprised by the nice collection of medieval weapons(especially the crossbows) and armour, the miniature paper models of the castle and celebrated Battle of Grandson(1476), in which Swiss soldiers defeated the army of Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy. The inside of the castle has been nicely maintained, and there are several lovely larger rooms which you can rent for events. The biggest surprise was walking down into the basement of the castle to check out the antique car museum. It is definitely worth the trip down the stairs to see, don’t pass it up. It was incredible to check out these beautiful cars in the setting of a castle basement! They even claim to have Greta Garbo’s famous Rolls Royce. Overall for only 12CHF per person, the castle was definitely worth a visit. My only wish is that they had more signs in English. You do get a quick guide in English, but it has limited information. There is a café on site for you to enjoy a nice view of the lake and a bite to eat, or taste a sip of the Castle’s reserve Pinot Noir wine.
