Kabooom. One of the spots I wished I found earlier. I’ve been reading comics my whole life and I discovered comic book stores culture when I spent quite a bit of time in NYC over the past 5 years of my life. And frankly, I always missed it when I was back at home here in Zurich. There are quite a couple of comic book shops here, but most of them focus on French or German comics, which usually doesn’t interest me as much. What I was looking for was a store that emulated my US comic book experience: Get your new comics when they come out, have a passionate crew of people running it and, optionally, make it a place where you could have prolonged, geeky discussions about stuff nobody else cares about. Little did I know that Kabooom was pretty much that. When I stumbled in one Saturday to drop of some flyers for a project I was building at the time, having found the address on Google before, I was astonished: This place imports US comics and only US comics. The owner, Patrik, knows what he’s talking about and you can even maintain your personal pull list and pick up your series whenever you want. This is pretty much a US comic book store about 5’000 miles from where it would naturally be. And that’s amazing. One hint though: Kabooom, so I learned from talking to Patrik, is run as a side-project of the owners, so the core staff is only available on Friday nights and Saturdays. The remaining time, you can still buy stuff, but the person selling it is pure sales and not really into comic books. So if you want to stop by, make sure it’s when Patrik is around. They usually post their schedule for new releases and opening hours on Facebook, so that might be a good place to check out, too.
