Don’t let the hippy jazz /lounge music intimidate you. Tachinomiya invaded the Kovan neighbourhood about 6 months ago and it’s located a couple of doors down from Hatter Street café. This restro-bar serves Japanese food, a great variety of sakes and whiskies at crazy affordable prices. There’s a weekday lunch set available(with 4 options to choose from) reasonably priced at $ 8.90 only. If you’re going in a group, you might wanna add on to that order with a side of Yakitori(they’re good for this). Wash it down with a nice 500ml pint of Asahi beer on a hot afternoon(there’s black Asahi available too!) & the bill per person amounts to less than $ 20. Didn’t fancy the disposable utensils but it keeps serving & clearing more efficient. It gets crowded in the evenings when people knock off work & come by for drinks & bites. Nice, laid-back place. You would expect service to be slack since there’s NO service &GST charge, but No. it’s personal & quite attentive. drop a tip for the server(s) if you appreciate the servic If you enjoy good bites, drinks set in a casual neighbourhood, you should check out Tachinomiya. This little shop deserves a little more awareness:)

4 set lunch choice to choose from. The katsu curry seem popular and the Gyu Beef set too. Presentation of the meal was in take out boxes. If you are familiar with the popular Tori Tori yakitori seen in malls, the take out box is like that. While there’s a Japanese feel of efficiency, it does take away the presentation. The Katsu curry rice is reasonable in taste but the Gyu beef in soy sauce was somewhat too saltish for my preference. For the price of the lunch set with miso and Ocha is reasonable. The yakitori was a bit of disappointment. It was dry and tough. From the open kitchen, I noticed that the yakitori was partially prepared in oven instead of the traditional grill. It is worth to give it a try and hopefully they have fine tune the recipe the next time I visit.
