I believe my first memory of hokkien mee is the one from Yang Zhou Fried Hokkien Mee. We were taken care of by my grandmother who lives in the HDB nearby and she will give my cousin and I $ 1.50 to go downstairs to buy a packet home for lunch. This hokkien mee thus sets the standard for all the subsequent hokkien mee I tried thereafter. Recently, I went back again after 5 years and had a plate of hokkien mee. The coffee shop looks the same and once I step near the shop, the familiar smell of hokkien mee just came to me. The plate of hokkien mee tasted exactly as it did 20 years ago and the uncle frying the noodles was the same too — albeit older. The hokkien mee is fried to the correct wetness — and you can taste the sweet soup in every mouthful of the noodles. The chili that comes with it is the highlight of the dish — it is so good that you have to pay extra $ 0.30 to get more of it. I know everyone has their preference when it comes to hokkien mee but you got to give this a try — and I don’t think you will be disappointed.

There are a lot of nice Hokkien Mee around in Singapore and different people has different liking to Hokkien Mee. Hokkien Mee is one of the Singapore Signature dish ranked high in my heart. The Hokkien Mee at this small coffee shop is known little to many but defined by my boyfriend to be one of the best in Singapore. For $ 3, you get a plate of Hokkien Mee enough to fill your stomach. The Hokkien Mee has pork lard and noodle isn’t too soft till sticky but absorbed enough soup stock. Match it with the chili, shiok. Customer at the coffee shop sit around outside the small stall. So it is not too difficult to spot the red plate once you are there. Another amazing thing that I secretly feel is that the Cook, which is also the boss is able to remember all the orders in his head and deliver correctly to the right table. You may need to wait for 5−10mins for your plate of Hokkien Mee. The stall is open from 10am to 8pm and close on Friday.
