Mandarin Oriental

I have no doubt that this Mandarin will remain the iconic flagship of the Mandarin Oriental properties. It could not be located in a better place and is hugged on all sides by luxury shops, but is within walking distance of LKF as well as some of the more local, HK flavors worth checking out during your stay. I think the biggest perk/​bonus is really the spa and lounge area. Tucked away towards the top of the building, this is your go-​to spot if you need a place to freshen up following a long flight. We missed our change to shower and freshen up in the airport lounge in HKG so thought we had to «settle» for the facilities in the Mandarin. Settle we did not, as it was beyond luxurious and the staff could not be more helpful and friendly. They also provided some great food recs on our way out the door. Would definitely stay again.

There are now 2 Mandarin Hotels, but this will always remain THE BEST one! It is the original and it has a place in my heart from my childhood as well as adulthood.
This is a classic. I’m here on this trip for the Michelin announcement press conference and as usual they’ve laid out a spread that’s delicious and uniquely Hong Kong.
Service is impeccable. I’ve always loved using the «powder room» on the 1^st floor. It’s blue and as always, in the high end hotels, there’s a bathroom attendant. Be nice and leave a tip!

The epitome of luxury. From arrival to departure, I barely lifted a finger, as the staff bend over backwards for you. This is truly a full service hotel. And, as the one of oldest hotels in HK, MO maintains its history while implementing modern features you’d expect in this metropolitan city.
Highlights:
— Swift check in, I arrived ahead of my partner who booked the room and they graciously accommodated me
— Large, comfortable room with a huge bed that could probably fit 6 people. Perfect for conquering jet lag. Very modern, light switches look like control panels.
— Bathroom, this was my lair… Hermés bath products, dual shower head, fog less mirror, every toiletry and kit you could think of (including lint brush!!)
— Housekeeping was phenomenal. Lining my shoes up in the closet, folding clothes that I’d strewn about, wrapping up cords, arranging my cosmetics.
— Lots of dining and bar options. Just double check when they are open and serving food. I spent most time in the Clipper Lounge having cocktails, I mean afternoon tea. By Café Causette there is a walkway that will take you to a shopping mall. Inside there is a grocery store (Oliver’s) and a pharmacy (Mannings), among high end shopping stores.

I’ve been lucky enough to stay in some very nice hotels in the past, and the Mandarin Oriental ranks up there with my favorites (The Plaza NYC, Waldorf Astoria NYC, St. Regis Monarch Beach, and Ritz-​Carlton New Orleans). Top to bottom, everything about the hotel is fantastic.
LOCATION:
— Located in the heart of Central, the MO provides easy foot access to the various Landmark buildings via air-​conditioned walkways (from the Mezzanine level), and from there to the IFC, ferry piers, and the Central and Hong Kong MTR stations through elevated walkways without being exposed to the sun or rain.
— The MO is a brief walk (or very quick cab ride) to tourist attractions like the Star Ferry, HK Observation Wheel, Peak Tram, SoHo, and Lan Kwai Fong.
HOTEL SERVICE:
— The service here really sets it apart from your typical high-​end hotel. The doormen practically run to greet you, pick up your bags, open doors, or get you a taxi.
— The front desk, concierge, and bell desk are always fully staffed so you are never left waiting.
— I arrived early in the morning, was offered access to the spa to shower/​change, was able to use the business center, and was provided with a complimentary breakfast.
— Once my room was ready, the clerk escorted me to my room and provided me with a tour of the room, and answered all my questions.
— If you get a «Fan Club» rate you are entitled to breakfast for two, free internet, and a $ 100 food/​beverage credit.
ROOM:
— Room 1020 faced north toward Kowloon and had a beautiful view of the harbor, HK Observation Wheel, the Kowloon skyline, and down to the Hong Kong Convention Centre. The east-​facing rooms have views over Statue Square, the HSBC building, and the Bank of China Tower (by I.M. Pei).
— My room was truly in a western-​style but other rooms have different setups. The décor itself isn’t super fancy, but everything is very comfortable and functional.
— Rooms come with a valet box for deliveries of newspapers and packages. As you enter the room you’ll see the valet box light on. Remove your delivery and the valet box light goes off. Brilliant!
— Lights can be turned on/​off/​adjusted at the room entrance, next to the bed, and with a remote control.
— My bathroom had a shower and tub all in one room. The shower had two heads as well as a handheld head if you prefer. A portion of the mirror must have been heated as it never fogged up allowing you to shave or preen whilst in the shower.
— All outlets accept both US and UK/​Hong Kong-​style plugs so no need for you to pack a converter.
IN-​ROOM SERVICE:
— Turn down service includes filling your ice bucket with ice, leaving slippers out next to the bed, dimming the lights, and turning the TV on to mellow music. Best of all your bed is turned down and a tray is set on the bed including the remote, the in-​room breakfast menu, and a seemingly different amenity every day — lavender pillow spray, salt scrub, eye mask, foot spray, etc.
— If you leave dirty clothes on the floor they’ll fold them for you (so I’ve been told).
— If you leave cords dangling around your room they’ll wind them up and velcro them together for you, keeping things organized.

In 2007, our Qantas airlines flight from Hong kong to australia was cancelled. Qantas airlines generously provided each passenger a luxurious, and very elegant room at Mandarin Oriental; to help smooth out the wrinkles.
The hotel is truly one of the top-​notch hotels in Hong Kong. The upscale bathroom was a gorgeous dream. The big bed was exceptionally super comfortable to relax in. The sleek modern glass bathtub made me feel like if I was in a spa, and the water pressure, oh my, just the icing on the cake. Seriously I didn’t want to leave. I’m sure it cost an exorbitant amount.
Five Unilocal

The old Mandarin in Central is still the best! I needed to be in several offices in Central during the day on both sides of Gloucester Road. Mandarin is the place. They all call you by name, Mr. S, and I am told they keep a personal file on you from your visits to anticipate your preferences. They have two or is it three Michelin restaurants plus five other bars and eateries. The rooms are immaculate from electronics to plumbing. Binoculars for viewing across the harbour to Kowloon and a cell phone if you need a local one for example. Check out the harbor view pic from the room posted here.
I just collapsed the first night and slept soundly in the linen sheets, didn’t use the tv. Great shower with double heads plus a big rain head straight down. I like a quick meal at the Chinnery (See other reviews). Light breakfast at the bakery cake shop is very good. You can sit at a table and be served, buy at the counter and sit at the bar, or buy and take out to your room. Pastries bought at the counter are much bigger than those served at the table, a strange touch peculiar to the culture of this property group. Exact same flakes and fillings but smaller. All food is excellent. The bars serve beer in silver mugs, but I like the airy feeling of their sister MO in the Landmark better.
Brits occupied the best suites here, then Americans followed by a sprinkling of Japanese and Europeans. Now they are Mandarin speakers with a sprinkling of Shanghainese. And it is still the best in Hong Kong which is pretty hard to beat.

This is a flagship Mandarin Oriental hotel. The service and amenities here are top notch. Its very centrally located next to all the finest shops and near the underground. Its also just a short walk from the tram that goes up to Victoria’s Peak.
I stayed here for a week in September 2012 and really enjoyed my stay. The trip started out great with some people from the hotel meeting us at the gate at the airport on a golf cart and expediting us through customs to our waiting limo for the ride to the hotel. The staff here is very accommodating. Housekeeping must have come to our room 2 – 3 times a day to clean, fold dirty clothes, provide turn down service, pickup/​drop off laundry, etc.
The gym at the hotel is quite decent. They have a mix of cardio machines and dumbbells. Towels, fruit and water is provided.
The food at the hotel is so amazing. I had dim sum almost everyday. The best meal at the hotel was the weekend brunch. Its one of the top brunches I have ever had the pleasure of enjoying. It has food from the east and the west.
I would highly recommend this hotel if its in your budget.
