The Garden Café Pub on Cheung Chau may in fact be the only pub on Cheung Chau. It’s really easy to find on the main cut through from the ferry pier to the beach, so there is really no excuse not to pay it a visit. The pub itself is quite a dark and dingy affair, but that’s quite welcoming after a hot day baking on the beach. As you can imagine it serves the standard pub fare of beers, wines and spirits, but there are also two interesting additions to this standard menu. First; there is a BBQ garden area(which actually looks as though it belongs to a neighbouring B&B), where a chef grills up great German sausages. Second; for some reason they specialise in Taiwanese shaved ice, with a variety of flavours like condensed milk, mango, strawberry. A fairly odd combo, but why not, hey? It’s not the nicest looking place in the world, see previous comment about being dingy, with the whole interior a bit tired and grotty. They do like to pile up their stock all over the bar, so you do feel like you are invading the warehouse. And the staff are a bit inflexible, just don’t try to ask for your shaved ice without the strawberry sauce! However, it’s a perfectly pleasant place to grab a beer before the ferry home, and if your peckish, do try their sausage. Surprisingly good!
