Vanilla is a small local bakery store on Mosque Junction in the Mid-Levels, serving a variety of cakes, savoury dishes, like sandwiches and pies, and coffee. However, this is not a coffee shop per se. The coffee comes out of a small machine, the sort of thing that you’d have in your kitchen if you’re a fancy guy living in Repulse Bay. What Vanilla is best known for(in my humble opinion), is their cakes and their savoury main dishes. All of their food is cooked in the open kitchen at the back of the store. The cakes come in a wide range of flavours, all of which are handcrafted to perfection. They truly are cakes like your mum used to make. I am also a huge fan of the big tray savoury dishes, and by this I mean the lasagna, the fish pie, and the shepherd’s pie. Mrs L doesn’t allow me to bring meat into the house, so I do find myself asking the owner to heat the shepherd’s pie, so that I can have it at the small window counter before getting home, yummers! Unfortunately, I don’t find the sandwiches there very good, but that’s not so much of a drama as the rest of the food is top dollar. The sport is seldom busy, and is only staffed by the owner, and maybe one assistant, who appear to work both the kitchen and the counter. As such, they can seem to be a bit short and frazzled at times. But give it a go, what they lack in customer service, they certainly make up in serving excellent food.
