Items Selected: Foie Torchon with Marmalade and Balsamic Baccala with crispy Onions and Peppers Queso, Iberico, Foie, Marmalade Torta Chicken Croquetta Coffee Flan, Vanilla Ice Cream Separating two Michelin 3* meals by nearly six hours with exploration of San Sebastian limited by falling rain and whipping wind that continued as it had throughout the week in Northeast Spain it was part hunger, part interest, and part seeking shelter that led me to Bar Bergara just after 18h00, and with several upscale Pintxo’s offered in a space both large and modern the dining experience proved to be a mixed one, service almost«French» in its disinterest with cost-to-quality ratios skewed too far leftward. No doubt more ‘upscale’ than Gatz or El Globo in Bilbao, the lighting alone an improvement as visitors are treated to large tables and polished surfaces with concrete floors and ceilings spanning high, the process at Bar Bergara is nonetheless similar to that of other like-places and grabbing a plate with eyes on diversity as opposed to ‘filling up’ a five Pintxo sampling was selected along with a kitchen plated dessert. Benefited by an early arrival, everything I tasted from the bar still warm except for the creamy liver that one would not expect to be anyhow, it was with bites of salt cod on toasted bread beneath chopped peppers and onions that the meal commenced, an «all my favorite things» follow-up of pork, cheese, and foie gras as decadent as it sounds though lent nice balance by bright citrus marmalade. Turning to tradition for plate two, the € 2.50 croquetta not only expensive but a bit oily despite being«fresh,» a better series of bites was located in the springy Spanish Torta with finely diced potatoes accented in Paprika while the simultaneously delivered flan was rich in espresso notes alongside half-melted ice cream that was unfortunately quite bland.

Absolutely incredibly tasty beautiful food! I’ve been in San Sebastián 3 days and haven’t missed a day yet! Loved the boccharones with ‘false lasagna’ mix of eggplant, tomato onions— going to try(unsuccessfully I’m sure) to replicate this one at home. Also the first day they had this incredible fish salad with an avocado sauce. Haven’t seen it again but I keep looking

If you’re looking for a quiet pinxtos bar away from the main drag, this place is perfect! I had a few tapas from the bar, all of which were delicious, and ordered some txalupas(crab meat in a delicious creamy sauce) which were divine.

Great food experience especially if you want to avoid touristic area of the Old Town. Bar Bergara is located in the Gros district(15 minutes walking from the center). You may want to try here some specialities like txangurro(spider crab) or txalupa(casserole of mashrooms and shrimps) which are my favourite here.

Excellent twist on traditional Pintxos or tapas here in the Gros neighborhood of San Sebastian. This is one of the few places in the neighborhood that does really innovative things and exciting things with its tapas. You will see an interesting mix of locals and tourists here enjoying the tapas which are not inexpensive. The service is excellent and is it wonderful place to enjoy some time.

Bar Bergara has won tons of awards for their tapas and they are very different than your usual Spanish tapas bars. Their dished are unique and creative and play with different textures and flavors. Come into the restaurant and ask for a plate. The cold tapas are served at the bar and you can just pick them as you please. The hot tapas need to be ordered from the server. At the end, you just tell them how many cold and how many hot tapas you had and they give you a check, usually 2.50−3 Euros each. My favorites were: –Txalupa(creamy, crunchy, hot, lobster/fish on a little tart) –Tortilla de Anchoas(cold toast with an egg omelette stuffed with potato and anchovies) –Itxaso(shrimp/fish with cream on tart, hot) –Udaberri(hot, creamy ham on a tart) –Hamburguesa de Tomate(cold, cod with tomato confit, very refreshing) Make sure you order some alcohol and sit and enjoy with the locals. Don’t get full on this stop, there are tons of other places to eat!
