True hand cooked and incredibly tasteful food matched with delightful staff, especially the owner Arturo. He spent a ton of time with us helping is learn the area and making recommendations. When we told him we loved hot, especially habenaro peppers he made a couple of dishes that blew our minds away! Simply a great place, we couldn’t say more. Arturo has a love for cooking that is so so clear. Best food experience of our trip!

We visited Girona from California and were recommended by some locals to try this place. We visit Mexico and eat Mexican food often and this place made us feel like we were back home! Food was fresh, authentic, and well priced. The margarita was also amazing(and very strong). Did not disappoint at all! A must visit if you enjoy Mexican food.

After wandering around Girona for a couple of hours we stumbled into this area and ate at Maguey based on Unilocal reviews. WEWERENOTDISAPPOINTED! Do yourself a favor, talk to Arturo(the owner) and let him make suggestions and bring you his specials. The food was amazing and so was the staff! I wish we were staying here longer so I could eat at his restaurant one more time! Arturo speaks English so getting what you want is not a problem.

This place is phenomenal! The owner, Arturo, is super nice, very gracious and speaks English well. If you like American style spicy Mexican food let him know and he will hook it up. This is a must eat at spot in Girona!

Had the fajitas pollo, sin queso because I’m allergic. The owner waited on us, spoke really good English and we had frijoles refritos that were all authentic Mexican. He finished us off with a chick oats made with tequila. Mucho gusto and I will come here again.

I grew up eating Mexican food and live in the southwest of the USA so it’s something I crave after just a few days of traveling. I was in Girona and wanted something other than tapas, so came across this place, which had great Unilocal reviews. It is definitely legitimate Mexican food — it did not disappoint! The green enchiladas were nice and spicy(changed my order after the waitress told me the red wasn’t spicy) and I also tried the carnitas tacos, which were loaded with meat — they do not skimp here! Even the drinks were very strong! Arturo, the chef, seemed to be very hospitable, as were our servers. Wish I could eat here all the time!

The previous iteration of Mexican food/restaurants in Girona consisted of the garbage you’d find in the frozen section of a grocery store. The cook would then deep fry or microwave your«entrée» and then you would be living la vida loca. It was terrible. Then Arturo came to town and started Maquey. Oh my Lord, it’s life changing. Or a least it brings authentic Mexican food, from a Mexican chef, into Girona. The menu is great but I recommend asking what he’s making that day. Tons of specials. And his house margarita is divine.(Extensive tequila list too…)

Beautiful, fresh, authentic Mexican. Traditional marguerites were especially great, as were the guacamole, & the fantastic Enchiladas Mole. Our son had the beef tacos and loved them too! The chef/owner is from Mexico and he came over to our table to talk for a bit. After five months living in Spain we felt a craving for Mexican. Especially since our ten year old son was with us for a day trip in Girona. We were looking for tasty & kid friendly and found both at Maquey.

Maquey was a fantastic experience to find in Spain where good, authentic Mexican food is hard to come by. My wife and I shared a Carnitas plate and Guacamole and I must say that the Carnitas were as good as they get. It was obvious that someone in the kitchen is truly from Mexico. After the meal we spent a good amount of time talking to the owner, Arturo, who is in fact from Mexico City. He spoke to us about his menu and offerings and how he prepares the food. This restaurant is a gem amongst a lot of tourist trappings. If you find yourself in Girona, stop in at Maquey.
