dia is THE supermarket/grocery store if you are living in the heart of madrid. i saw this in every neighborhood that i visited, and this one was closest to where i was staying when i was visiting madrid. they have pretty much everything, bread, fruit, veggies, meat, milk, yogurt, sweets, and general household items like laundry and dish detergent. although we didn’t speak spanish, if we could make out the picture on the packaging, we were good to go! since hubby and i had access to a fridge and microwave where we were staying, we didn’t hesitate to purchase perishable items, and in particular, cold drinks since it was still very warm in madrid in september. the good news is that they accepted american credit cards and prices were very reasonable(especially coming from tourists). the bad news is that the lines are atrociously long! it may have to do with the time of day we usually came, but most times, we waited for at least 15, if not 20 minutes to check out. there is no express or self-checkout like we see in the states, something that i now come to really appreciate. also, they tend to close on the earlier side, no 24⁄7 like where i live, but more like opening around 0700⁄0800 and closing around 2100, pretty early for american standards, but this is likely the way the spaniards operate. at least no one has to do the graveyard shift here!
