This is a great stately statue standing in the Plaza de la Puerta del Sol. It looks like a lot of the other statues of kings around Europe and like them he watches over a bunch of people going about their business without seeming to notice him except to veer around…
He however has a great view from up there. The plaza is always busy. Street performers, tourists taking selfies, grand buildings and shoppers. I hope he likes people watching as much as I do.
I don’t know how much time I have leaned against his base to watch the show around him unfold…
According to some reading, even though it looks like it was here forever it is actually fairly new. It is a scaled down version of a larger statue elsewhere. This king was chosen as he is responsible for much of the plaza.
Note: he had an interesting past, I think it is worth looking him up.
