Highly recommendable restaurant! My friend from Santiago reserved this place for us — we were 8 people total — and we had a brilliant evening… We shared a number of dishes, mainly seafood, and these were delicious. The house wine was also good. The portions are abundant… Let the restaurant prepare a variety of desserts to share! Very yummy!!! The setup of the place is typical for this area. Big wooden tables… Stone walls… The ceiling covered with greens(i.e. plants)… Very nice! The service and prices were good. We much enjoyed the live music they played later on with particular instruments. Galician music and dance! :) Make a reservation to be sure of a table… Also for lunch as this place is usually packed. ;) Enjoy!

I dined in a Michelin-starred restaurant and O Dezaseis when I visited Santiago in May 2009, and I preferred my meal in the latter. The Michelin-starred restaurant’s meal was incredible and the service impeccable, but O Dezaseis had both of those qualities too, at less than one third the price! I had a three course meal here, and struggled to finish it. The empanada was delicious, the pulpo utterly divine and the crème caramel dessert heavenly. As I was dining by myself, and at an early hour(for Spain), the waitstaff were very attentive but considerate in that they didn’t make me feel awkward for being the only one in there. My waiter came over to chat with me every now and then, making sure I was at ease there. I’d recommend this place to anyone passing through SdC in a heartbeat.

Visited this restaurant when I was on hoilday in Santiago de Compostela in July. We chose from the menu del dia, which was very reasonable for 3 courses and coffee. Starter of Pulpo(octopus Galician style), various griddled fish for my main and strawberry cake for dessert. Fantastic value and service.

This restaurant is excellent and has enough variety to have everyone leave saying the same thing. The two things one can say are: the portions are good-sized and the prices are very good. Add to that an unusual location — you have to go down worn medieval steps into a stone-lined room, but you can also(when it is not raining) dine in an open patio-like area in the back of the building. The visitor may see just these features, but the resident of Santiago de Compostela knows O Dezaséis(The 16, which is the street number on Rúa de San Pedro) is popular to locals. It is the gathering site of many groups of friends(reservations can be made online, even — something unique for this city) and of certain political groups. In Galicia, when a place becomes popular, it usually is for a reason — good cooking and/or good wine. Atmosphere will naturally follow. However, none of these things should be seen as negative — it is a comfortable, attractive place to dine either in the lunchtime slot or for supper. The groups, if they happen to have gathered at the same time, are not a bother, and some of them may be your friends after you have been in Santiago long enough, so you could end up joining them. This city full of tourists also has its own population of sociable people, of course! One more thing to note is that while this could be classified as a Spanish restaurant, those in the know will realize that it is actually very GALICIAN, not only in setting and décor, but also in the type of dishes offered. The menu is not southern Spain or even Castile style. Even the traditional or standard tortilla(omelette) is done in a way that fits this area. And perhaps the management would not be thrilled at being thought Spanish… I was very surprised to find this restaurant had been reviewed in the NYT,
and hope it does not bring in hordes of customers. O Dezaséis is perfect just as it is. By the way, right across the street is the Museo do Pobo Galego and the modern art museum(reviews of these in the future) and you are only steps away from the cathedral because this is still the medieval part of the city.
