after a full morning of sightseeing, and a train to catch within the hour, we needed to find a place where we could grab something quick to take on the train with us so that we could have some lunch. fortunately, this was pretty close to our hotel(where our cabbie would pick us up in a matter of minutes), and they had sandwiches and other snacks available for purchase. although the lady who worked here didn’t speak english, i had grasped enough food-related words in spanish to get by. i wanted to order two sandwiches and a donut for our trip, so in my very, very weak spanish, i said«uno, bocadillo, queso, y tomatoes» and then«uno, bocadillo, jamon y queso.» since i didn’t know the word for donut, i motioned to the pastry display case and pointed to the plain donut, covered in sugar. it was enough to get the message across, and within a matter of minutes, the kind lady assembled and wrapped up a cheese & tomato sandwich, a ham & cheese sandwich, and one sugar donut, put them in a bag, and handed it to me. the total? € 7.10, not bad for two generously sized sammies plus a pastry! we didn’t get to eat them until a bit later, since we were rushing to the train station, but once we were settled into our seats and on our way, we quite enjoyed these sandwiches! there was a generous amount of filling inside each sammy, which i appreciated since many places give you a ton of bread with little filling. i’m not sure which was more satisfying, the fact that the sandwiches were good and filled our tummies, or the fact that i was actually able to communicate to a native in my very broken spanish. either way, i will definitely remember this café as a good place to pick up something to go!
