You can have pitas anywhere. You can have hummus anywhere. There are donner kebabs and shish kebabs everywhere. But ONLY in Turkey are you going to find Kokorec and this is the spot to come get it. You don’t want to think about what it is but if it helps(or not), Kokorec consumption is one reason that Turkey didn’t join the European Union. It’s one of those parts of the animal that most Americans would toss in the bin, but here, it’s a delicacy. This was a quick stop on our food tour and we didn’t eat much of it. Enough to meet the master roaster and have a quick bite while we watched him prepare the meat on the spits and chop it up onto a bread roll. Tasty!

My one and only chance to try Kokorec in Turkey was at Kral. I didn’t have any expectations before trying it but I found it to be chewy and a little gamey. There wasn’t a lot of meat so I’m glad I had it served in the pita rather than the hero. The meat was under-seasoned so it tasted better with the brine from the pickled peppers.
