I spent four years of my life on this old Naval Base. It was kinda sad when Slick Willy closed it down. Then someone went and imploded my Hospital too in Oakland. Oh well. Its still a great place to drive around on and being able to walk pier 3 is the bomb. Love the memories here.

If zombies were to plan a worldwide sabotage and needed a headquarters, Alameda would be it. Specifically, this abandoned naval base. With nothing to shield you from the sun above, the heat radiates against the asphalt below causing an overly-cinematic wavy-glare on everything in the distance. You get the eerie sensation that thing’s are a little too quiet. A little too vacant. But life exists at the skatepark just beyond what was once the navy yard’s security checkpoint. Who’s there? Likely John Connor when he’s not with The Terminator. Deep in the belly of Area 51 version 2.0, there’s lots and lots of liquor though. St. George Spirits hangs its flag from the trenches of this desolate concrete cemetery and Rock Wall Winery(created by the Rosenblum daughter) lies there as well. If you’re intrigued by the bizarre and out-of-place, Alameda Point is a destination you don’t want to miss. And once you go, don’t miss out on tours/tastings at the aforementioned watering holes(just make sure they’re open or haven’t been raided by brain-eaters).

With approximately 60 military commands for a combined military/civilian work force of over 18,000 personnel. The U.S. Naval Air Station was decommissioned on April 1997 and the Navy began turning the property over to the City of Alameda. Changing it’s name to Alameda Point. The property became home to a variety of business companies. To name a few… USS Hornet Museum Alameda Naval Air Museum Bladium Sports Club Alameda Skate Park Alameda Point Gym Hanger One Vodka Distillery Alameda Point Antiques and Collectibles Faire Alameda Point Storage Alameda Point Hotel St. George Spirits Distillery Bay Area School of Enterprise(Charter School) Alameda Point Community Garden Housing program for the homeless Ferry Dock The Source Bakery and Café The TV series MYTHBUSTERS conducts some of its destructive experiments here due to the extensive safety zone. For the same reason, this location has also been used as a checkpoint for the Spike TV’s BULLRUN rally race. Furthermore, the lengthy car chase sequence for the movie The MATRIXRELOADED was filmed at the former runway.

After seeing countless Myth Busters episodes where they blow things up and Anthony Bourdain drinking spirits and driving his mustang around an area where the backdrop of SF is quite stunning, I finally got to see the site where all those happend. Owned by the City of Alameda and generally closed off to the public, this piece of old Naval base doubles as a autocross track. PCNA had an event here where they brought out 5 of their new 2011 models and we got to race each one of them around the track. Open asphalt, great weather and the sites of SF skyline in the background make for a great event in a place where few get to roam
