Mike’s Country Store

This place was a pleasant surprise. Compared to meat prices around town, the meat here was affordable and looked pretty fresh. The peanut brittle was awesome as well. Whether you are coming for a few quick items or a full-​fledge shopping effort, Mikes can deliver.

I am pretty certain this is called «Mike’s Country Store.» I need to read the name tomorrow when I drive by; I’ll feel a little embarrassed if it has been called Mike’s County Store this entire time and I’ve been misreading it, because I’ve been shopping there for at least a few years. I might even take a picture of the store for the site since it seems to need a few. It may also prove that I am right about the name.
Mike’s is a nice little store. It has an old and traditional feeling to it. There are rocking chairs just inside the store. Sometimes you will see an elderly person just relaxing in them. They have little soda boxes with ice in them. The parking lot is small. The workers are local and country. They have decent prices in certain areas and they run small sales weekly. They generally have good meat and the sale prices on some of their meats are great.
They sell boiled peanuts! Boiled peanuts are a pain to make, but I love them so much. I found out in the past couple of years that boiled peanuts are not common throughout the US. I guess I am not terribly astonished by this, but if you have never tried boiled peanuts then you should. It will either be a mediocre experience or a life-​changing experience for you. Either way the price for a big cup of peanuts here is pretty reasonable in my opinion.
Finally, I wouldn’t compare their meat to a place like Stripling’s, Carroll’s or Salt Lick. They have good meat, but I do find it lacking sometimes. Their bacon is just awful. Their sausage is pretty bad too. I would stick to the general meats such as their steaks, ground beef, etc. I did make some of their ribs one time and it turned out pretty great. It’s a great place and convenient for residents in the Philema area.

Use to be a really great place to shop. Over the last 6 months the prices have went sky high. They even advertised new lower prices. I guess they took 1 or 2 cents off their new over inflated markup on everything. When you pay $ 5.00 for a 12 pack of soda it is time to shop elsewhere.
