Barbara and her team lead an amazing organization from the goodness of their hearts. Their valuable work is not to be lightly passed over. They are always in need of volunteers, but still manage to do so much with those that are there. GO and support them! Attend events, give donations of whatever you have — even if it’s just time — and help to make a better workplace for low-income Alaskans.

Pamela P. above seems to be quite skeptical, let me change her mind. I have been volunteering with AWA for a decade. They are a membership organization of low income working people. They organize members by offering benefits like free clothing distributions, free food distributions, medical care. All of these things are donated to AWA, doctors donate their time and everyone who is with AWA is not paid, it is all volunteer, we ask that members«pay it forward» by canvassing a neighborhood«walking» door to door and signing up new members. Membership is $.64 a month dues, but it is not required, many of our members can’t afford that. There are times when a member has a bigger issue and a trained, long standing AWA volunteer will advocate for them. I have done this for a family who was having trouble navigating a public assistance program. Most times when a person is in distress they hear what they want to hear and it may not be what is said(doctors office) it is helpful to have an extra set of ears and eyes to take notes and ask questions so everyone understands what is required. I am sorry she felt the people were creepy, I think she may have mistaken, low income for creepy. I like the organization, will continue to volunteer with them and if you have clothing or time please consider donating to AWA.
