Are they still open? Every time I go by they seem closed.

Disappointed in this place the last two visits. One time the burger was so undercooked it was bloody, the next time the corn dog was still frozen. Then the replacement corn dog was also undercooked. Not good when you have a hungry kid! They did comp the meal and gave us milkshakes on the house, but whole thing makes me wary to return.

I got breakfast food this time around and I’m very glad I did. I ordered the Greek Omelet with egg whites and substituted fruit for potatoes or grits. The egg whites were stuffed with a delicious blend of spinach and peppers with a nice sprinkling of feta. Great sides too, with two slices of melon, orange and toast. Great fresh, hot coffee to accompany and breakfast/brunch. The sliders are FYI so get those too. Friendly attentive staff!

I stopped here my first morning in Anchorage. I was seated right away with friendly service. I ordered the special for breakfast that day, and it was delicious! Sweet potato hash with some sort of barbecue sauce and eggs and veggies. Like other reviews say, the restaurant is a little chilly, but not too bad! Better than outside at least. The décor is pretty cool, and the staff was very friendly. It’s not the greatest breakfast place in the world, but I would say it’s something to try at least once.

I went here for lunch the other day with my mom and brother. We were promptly seated in a comfy booth and ordered sandwiches. The restaurant wasn’t that crowded, but it took a while to get our food – I actually saw our orders sitting on the shelf for maybe five minutes before it was delivered to us. My mom’s reuben was very tasty, although my mom thought the amount of meat was a little much and hard to eat(a sentiment probably not shared by many), and my fried fish sandwich was good, not great. The bread that the sandwich was on was quite good. It came with a handful of fries, which was a good amount for me but seemed a little small. One really nice thing: my brother is an incredibly picky eater so he had eaten before lunch, but he ordered a soda when we ordered our meals. They brought him a personal pitcher which was perfect; he could dole out his own soda and wouldn’t have to ask for refills.

Welll, they do offer a 10% senior discount… But if the food is meh, not an enticement. Had the advertised as medium liver and onion, basic diner food… What could go wrong? Liver dry and mealy, bacon not sauteed with the onion, just dropped on top, mashed potato soupy … And sour??? Inedible. The gravy, a bisto style sauce from a packet. The good? Steamed kale and dinner roll. Id eaten breakfast here before with similar execution, just not good.

I always hate to write a bad review for a restaurant after the wait staff and managment were so friendly to me. But I’m left little choice. Like others on here have mentioned I too have always driven by City Diner and thought about stopping in. Well, today my wife and I finally stopped by to try it out. Upon entering the mostly empty restaurant, we noticed a distinct chill in the air. The restaurant was cold! Probably because of the very large windows throughout. They really need to crank up the heat in there. This IS Alaska! My wife and I both ordered the chicken fried steak. We were excited because we both love that dish at other restaurants. I’m sad to say though that City Diner really missed the mark on this one. The«steak» was thin, tough and had virtually no flavor to it. And they barely put any gravy on it which only added to the lack of flavor. We asked for more gravy and the waitress was quick to bring out some more for us but it was too little, too late. Even Jesus himself couldn’t save this dish! The home fries were pretty delicious though! That was the only redeeming quality of this meal. Oh, and the coffee sucked! The water to coffee ratio was way off. It tasted like hot water with a little coffee in it. It reminded me of Army ‘field coffee!’ Lol! Neither myself or my wife finished our CFS and when the bill came it only added insult to injury; $ 30.00 for 2 people for breakfast is pretty steep! And that’s before tip! Having finally given this restaurant a chance after all these years it’s safe to say I will NOT be giving them another chance. There are too many other better options in Anchorage than to gamble on City Diner ever again. Interesting décor, friendly staff, bad coffee, sub par food. The second star is only because the service.

I drove by many times saying, «Gee I want to try that place», and today I made a point of stopping in and trying this dinner. From the outside City Dinner looks like a retro 50’s dinner. Pretty cool looking. The two ladies that seated me and took my order were nice; no complaints there. I decided on their Signature carving Board French Dip; one of the highest priced items on the menu at $ 14.50. When it was delivered,(I am assuming that it was the manager who did the honors), the dish was very disappointing to look at. Presentation was not part of the meal here. The fries were dumped all over the French dip as if they had to get it out there pronto,(which wasn’t the case as I waited for some time for my order). I did ask the waitress to make the sirloin medium well instead of medium rare as the menu indicated. This dish being a signature dish should have been over the top in quality, however, the meat was so tough I needed a knife to cut it and the meat was laced heavily with gristle. I had to dissect the sandwich and remove gristle. The meat was flavorless and it was like chewing shoe leather with gristle. The only thing about the sandwich was the ciabatta roll was fresh and actually helped mask the nasty tasting meat. The French dip was served with smaller sized French fries which I don’t mind but these fries were the frozen kind and they had been deep fried, possibly the day before, and reheated. I tried two of the French fries because I thought my first French Fry tasted strange so I tried another thinking I had gotten a bad fry but I was wrong, they too were uneatable. I drank my water and paid my check. For a specialty item as City Dinner presents this dish it was beyond disappointing to say the least. I went there for an experience and I guess you could say I got one. I won’t be back.

I love that this place has consistent good service. The waitresses are really nice and attentive, so I don’t have the heart to tell them that a lot of the food is sub-par over my many visits. The coffee is legit diner coffee: old-school and weak. The breakfast options are great, there are a lot of winners on the menu like a french toast breakfast sandwich that was pretty darn amazing. But then there are others like the steak and eggs that are thin, cheap pieces of meat that don’t seem to hold up to their price range. I would avoid any of the benedict variations, which left me nauseous, because of frozen spinach and the meal drowning in hollandaise. I feel like this place is kind of a coin toss.

They have breakfast and brunch menus– right into lunch and dinner. Service is always quick and pleasant. Only 1x in fully a dozen times here have I been close to what I would consider dis satisfied. But as a rule the food is great, wait staff is excellent and atmosphere keeps me coming back

We each had a great dinner tonight. She had the cheese steak sandwich I had the Ruben sandwich. Service was polite and kept checking back to make sure we were good. This is our second time eating here while vacationing here in Alaska. Glad we found that his place. We also enjoyed the meatloaf and pot roast dinner two weeks ago. Prices are reasonable for the meals. Try this place if you can.

I used to like this diner, they had a real home-cooked comfort food thing going on. Then I guess they got new management and tried to change things up. And the food suffered. For example the grits used to be great then they changed the portion size and added a bunch of weird seasoning. Some things are better left simple! The other thing was that maybe it was a bad night for them? But the waiter asked us our order no less than 3 times and our food took a really long time. This was when there was only my table and about two others eating at the time.

Tried this place for breakfast. Our server was Cindy, and she was super nice and made things right at our table. I ordered a short stack of pancakes but added chocolate chips and bananas to it. The cakes were delicious. My partner got the 2×2×2 and he said it was good. He liked the French toast so much, he requested a short stack to go with it. Both of our meals came out hot, fresh, and delicious. I will definitely be coming back to this place. I would like to try them for lunch. m one day. Next time.

Every city has *that* diner that’s like a security blanket you can fall back on when being indecisive on where you want to eat. For me, this is that diner. Everything is comfortable. It’s not too loud, it’s not too expensive, it’s not too anything. Just a solid place to hang out and eat good food. The menu reads like a standard diner menu, but the food is a step up from the standard diner offerings. The service I’ve gotten has always been friendly and patient as we sift through the menu(remember, we come here when we’re being indecisive. I don’t know why, it just happens that way) and of course the milkshakes make me very happy. If I had one wish, it might be that City Diner was open 24 hours a day. Not totally committed on the use of my one wish, but I would absolutely consider it.

I love the 50’s era and so when we went past this place I totally spazzed and we had dinner there. I didn’t expect any of the stuff we experienced though. I thought it was going to be a normal walk-in, sit-where-you-want place full and noisy. In truth it’s a fancy restaurant where they seat you and you get to enjoy your meal with great ambience. The music is great, I love the oldies, and their food is epic! Kind of pricey but worth it since it seems you can be full for a whole week after your meal. The food is delicious. City Diner is worth a visit!

Updating my review. After what happened last time I decided I will give it another try. I had the grilled chicken sandwich and it was really good! The wait for my grilled chicken wasn’t too long or too short. It gave me time to look over the place. I noticed the staff was friendly and focused. Food came out at a good pace and the staff was hustling. Couple of small things did bother me but did not sway me from eating my grilled chicken. As mentioned the wait wasn’t to bad after ordering but once food was delivered it was hard to get my server over to refill my drink and get my check. Not really too big a deal but I had to get back to work. While I wasn’t overly impressed I did like my food. I’ll be coming back for sure!

Went here for breakfast. It has a classy 50’s diner theme with 50’s music to boot. Funny thing is though the menu items don’t totally look like 50’s diner options and the menu itself is printed in a black hard bound book that seems to go beyond what you’d expect at a 50’s diner. Also, I had Eggs Benedict Florentine; probably not a top item for a 50’s diner. Someone obviously decided that they would go with a higher-end theme to class the place up, but I think that might confuse some folks that want a traditional diner experience. I think the diner exterior and interior as-is was great. I would have been happy with a simple plastic or paper diner menu with basic items. The prices were a little higher than I would expect, so maybe the fancier items were helping to justify the higher prices. In any case, the service and waiter were great. My Eggs Benedict was really, really good and done perfectly. However, the grits I ordered(yes, I’m one of the few that likes grits and knows what they should look and taste like) came out dry, lumpy, and cold. I told the waiter and he immediately gave me a big plate of potatoes instead. I loved the way he handled that. Turned a negative to a plus.

The food was actually OK– would have maybe been 3 stars buuuuut… Fries were faux Mc D type fries(deliciously bad) the salad was not terrible, the Reuben was not the best; the sauerkraut was tasteless and there was not nearly thick enough slabs of corned beef. The chili was OK– def get the onions on the side, they were raw and totally overpowered the watery chili. THESERVICEWASTERRIBLE. Our waitress who will not be named, was so unhappy and inconvenienced by patrons she had to wait on, I even apologized for asking a question! I will never come back because of the service. Also, please note that 2.00 milkshake Fridays are only for the«small» milkshakes(12oz) not the regular. This detail is not specified freely. I will revisit if someone asks to go to Village Inn(I will then suggest here) but not on my own volition.
