Best Cajun food in town! Been going for past 6 years and never disappointed. Today I had the calamari po’boy with shrimp bisque special. The calamari are cut in strips, lightly breaded and fried — soooo tender and flavorful! The bisque had several plump shrimps and a spicy kick, yet deliciously creamy The owner is genuinely a nice guy and also opened a south side location that’s just as yummy — I think they have live music once a week night

I went Saturday night to enjoy some bluegrass. Music was good. Food and wait staff was far below average. My opinion, it is not worth the time to go. Food is not like Lousianna food and I’m from the Southeast. My son had the Ceasar Salad but ended up getting sick from the dressing which in small print claimed that raw egg was used. They DONOT take credit cards properly. They want you to give them your number on the card write it down and process. I’m sure they don’t take advantage of this old school technology, but the possibility exist that another staff could missuse information. I will not recommend, nor will I visit this place again. I would recomeend if your going for bluegrass go for the water, can’t make a mistake there.

This place is good but not without their flaws. I’ve eaten at the downtown location about 3 or 4 times and the food is good but the place itself walks the line between charming and being a hole in the wall. It feels a little awkward being that it’s a restaurant inside of a house. On the upside, it has a parking lot which can’t be said for many places in the downtown area. The catfish was really tasty, I didn’t care much for the jambalaya and the gumbo gets a thumbs up but probably could have been better. Although I may have had high expectations given that«gumbo» is in their name. I had the«Kitchen Sink» gumbo twice now and I like it but nearly choked on a chicken bone this last time. So that was a bit of a turn off, it also lacked any heat or spice. I don’t really know if traditional gumbo has a lot of spices but that was always my understanding. Don’t get me wrong, it was savory and definitely hits the spot on a cold day but this tasted like it might be tamed down for the general public. Again, not an expert but I feel like there should be a more distinct«kick» to it. They do have Louisiana hot sauce at every table so you can add it yourself but I don’t like the fact that I had to in order to spice it up. The service is super friendly and seem genuinely nice so I feel kind of bad for only giving a 3 star but honestly I couldn’t forgive the chicken bone in the overly mild gumbo. Still, if you’re in the area and wanting something different than give them a try.

I’ve gone here and their south location, and everytime I’ve been impressed with the quality of the food. I had the special, fried chicken po boy and shrimp etoufee. Chicken was crispy and flavorful on the outside and moist on the inside. The bread was soft but a little chewy which I really like too. The flavor of the shrimp etoufee was fantastic with a generous amount of shrimp in it too. I need to come back more often!

After visiting New Orleans more then a few times I found myself always looking for some Cajun cooking! I was so happy to find them little gem! The kitchen sink gumbo is the way to go! I personally like the Jambalaya here so flavorful of yummy goodness! Blackened chicken Caesar salad is good has a nice spicy flavor to the chicken! Shrimp Po-boy is good too! The fried oysters are good just not as good as the ones I had in the N. O but this is the closest I have came to real Cajun food! Don’t leave without trying the Jambalaya!

As a New Orleanian, I feel it is my duty to rate this restaurant. I ordered the kitchen sink gumbo. It was good but next time I would just get the shrimp(the oysters were a bit fishy and the chicken left some bones in my bowl). My friend got the shrimp poboy and it looked amazing. I wanted a piece of the jalapeño cornbread but it had already sold out. Great portion sizes, nice owners, reasonable prices, charming atmosphere… overall a good pick for lunch in anchorage.

Comment ça se roule? One of the few places in Anchorage offering this type of cuisine, this is an A-Ok-fill-my-belly-up place to come check out. Located on the corner of 9th and F St, it is conveniently located in downtown Anchorage, and is within walking distance of many business and Government offices. There is also a private lot and abundant street parking in the area. The restaurant is located inside an old residence, and has a stand out Pink exterior. The ambiance inside is very homely, as would be expected. They didn’t really gut the interior, but rather just set up tables in each room of the house, which gives it a fun vibe. During the warmer months, there is also available outdoor seating. The wait staff is friendly and attentive. The turn around time on the food is good, with just enough time to chit chat with your party, or catch up on the news, before your food arrives. The food is pretty good, doesn’t really make a huge impression on me though. The Po Boy I ordered last time felt like it had too much bread, and not enough fixin’s. The Gumbo is pretty on point, think I’ll go with that next time. The menu is fairly limited, but each of the items is worth checking out IMO, so I’ll def be back to satiate the hunger…

I had the Kitchen Sink gumbo, which came with oyster, chicken, sausage, and shrimp. The portion was perfect for a hearty lunch, and the rice really sticks to your ribs. There was plenty of meat, which I liked, in decreasing order: shrimp, sausage, chicken, oyster. Keeping this in mind, I might order the shrimp gumbo next time since it comes with sausage. Could be spicier and the price point was a little high for what you got, but I would definitely eat more of their gumbo given the chance.

Yum Yum! We ordered the gumbo and jambalaya and we loved them both! It was just what I needed on a cold day! My little one had the fried chicken and fries. Thank you for the great food and customer service. If I were a local, I would order a bucket of this stuff regularly!

Where to go for a great fast food alternative? Gumbo House has faultlessly fantastic food. It is quick and the service is always genuine and friendly. The little house is a comfy and quiet place to enjoy a meal with a friend. Let the sunshine warm you through the windows as you enjoy the view of the park strip and the happiness in your mouf! I get the bbq shrimp po boy every time! Love!

Came back for the jambalaya. Honestly? Even better than the gumbo in my opinion! They were pretty evenly matched, but I felt the flavor was more distinct in the jambalaya as it was more tomato-based. I got another jalapeño cornbread, always good :)

As a person who loooooves gumbo and has had her fair share of excellent gumbo, this place does not cut it. Sorry. The service was great and the staff was super friendly and accommodating, but the gumbo was MEH. I order the kitchen sink gumbo. It lacked flavor big time and adding salt did not help. The only thing I could actually taste were the oysters. My mom got the catfish and red beans and rice. She wasn’t too impressed with her meal either. The only thing I can say I like were the corn muffins. Those were yummy. I really want to like this place b/c is has a homey feel and the hospitality is great, but the food misses the mark for me.

We’ve always struggled to find more than just a few quality places to eat in Anchorage. Meanwhile, the Gumbo House was a pleasant surprise. Having eaten at Orso and Glacier Brewhouse(two good places to eat downtown) many times we searched for something new and found this what looks to be a former house now turned small restaurant. At first, we were hesitant. This is far from Louisiana. However, photos online looked tempting enough to try. Fortunately, the flavor rivaled what was captured in photos. The Gumbo House is a much better than average place to eat in Anchorage that delivers friendly service and entrees that would hold their own in New Orleans(and yes, I’ve been to NOLA and all over Louisiana a dozen times). Even thousands of miles away, the Gumbo House has done a great job at bringing Cajun flavor to Alaska. Gumbo House is a great place for lunch or dinner. While their menu is limited the items on it are dynamite. Everything comes in a bowl or bucket. A bowl is filling enough. However, if you have a huge appetite a bucket will more than stuff you. We ordered the Shrimp Creole, Shrimp Gumbo and Jambalaya. All had wonderful rues. And, none of them tasted like they were made from a box. The ingredients tasted fresh an the portions are more than fair. In fact, even a smaller bowl(the bowl, rather than the bucket) had half a dozen shrimp in it. The Gumbo is worth ordering. It comes with shrimp, loads of andouille sausage and fresh okra. Very good. The jambalaya is filled with huge chunks of shrimp, chicken, andouille and more. In short, if you’re coming to eat here this isn’t much more(blackened catfish and a few other things) to choose from, but there’s a reason why this place is called the Gumbo House, it’s their specialty and they do it well. If you have a craving for Cajun, this spot may be the best West of the Rockies.

Ambiance was great! Don’t be fooled by the exterior, you’ll feel like you’re dining in a friendly Southern’s house. Service: was very friendly. Food: was A-OK. I was expecting things to be spicier. Maybe that’s my problem though, I love extremely hot/spicy food. I added lots of hot sauce, but everything still tasted kind of «tame» to me. I got a half-Po Boy/half-soup special. They were good but I wasn’t really blown away. The Po Boy had a bit too much bread for my liking. I’ll come back and try something else. I’m no expert in Cajun food so perhaps my expectations are just misaligned.

Excellent little place to grab a bowl of gumbo or jambalaya! The restaurant doesn’t look like mucj on the outside and it’s certainly not fancy, but the flavor is absolutely delicious! I ordered the jambalaya and it had a wonderful tomatoey taste to it. It was enough spicy for me but I can see how others would probably say it is not spicy enough. My husband ordered the kitchen sink gumbo and it was also very tasty. The gumbo has more of a pepper taste than the tomato taste of the jambalaya. There was a generous amount chicken, shrimp, and sausage too! One thing I think could be better is the bowl that this is placed in. I felt like both the gumbo and jambalaya would’ve been much more amazing and comfortable to eat if they had been in a rounder or larger bowl. There was little room for me to move the fork around without spilling rice. If you have the northern lights book you’ll save plenty with their coupon! :-)

This was the first time we tried gumbo. We ordered the chicken gumbo without any sausage meat. It is exactly same as sindhi kadhi that we make almost every other week. I love the one we make at home. The only difference was this had chicken. Never going for gumbo anymore.

I had my first visit tonight. I had the shrimp po boy, my dining partner had the andouille po boy, we both selected the potato salad as the side. The gentleman that seated and served us was great! I love the home like feel to the place, and he greeted us «welcome to my home». I felt this was a nice touch. The food. I loved my po boy, the shrimp were plentiful with a nice texture and flavor. The bread was nice and fresh, and the potato salad was good as well. My partner’s po boy was sublime. I snuck a bite, and the smoky sausage was very, very good. I will be returning!

This unassuming little house, painted Pepto Bismol pink and containing very little parking, is home to the greatest po’ boy north of NO. Seriously. I’ve never even had the title dish at the Gumbo House because the fried shrimp po’ boy is so wonderfully satisfying. Crisp, panko fried shrimp in a soft and slightly chewy hoagie style roll with housemade remoulade that has a slight horseradish kick to it… mmmmm. I love and consider myself a connoisseur of southern food and would highly recommend a trip to the Gumbo House for anyone in Anchorage – local and tourist alike!

The food tastes exactly how you would expect this New Orleans style of of food to taste. From the Po Boy to the salads, everything is on point. My only reason for giving it four stars is because I’m not a fan of this style of food and nothing made me want to change my mind. However, if you like this style of cuisine, you’re going to live the place! On a side note: This restaurant is a little house and the whole thing truly adds to the dining experience, it felt very original, as if I was transported back to the south.

I have been here a handful of times, twice dining in and twice dining out. The only reason I have given this place a 4 instead of 5 star is the dining experience. Unless you’re towards the back of the restaurant, there’s always a cold draft coming through the door and frankly, the furnishings could use an upgrade. I believe the restaurant is actually a conversion from an old home. Now, as for the food. It’s delicious! The gumbo is made with a very deep and dark roux, the depth of flavor is just what one would expect from a laborious and attentively made roux. The okra was not at all overcooked and tasted like it had to have been fresh and not out of a pre-frozen bag. I like that they slice their andouille sausage thin and the chicken is plentiful. If you are looking for a more interesting gumbo experience, go for the«kitchen sink» — it includes oysters and shrimp as well. The po-boys are also worth a nod. I have had the blackened shrimp and the BBQ pork po-boy and both totally hit the spot. The shrimp was cooked perfectly layered with just the right amount of blackening spices and accompaniments on a crisp and chewy hoagie roll. Same with the BBQ pork — and the BBQ sauce was a perfect balance of smoke and sweet. I need to venture out and try some of the other po’s inc. the catfish and oyster&shrimp. I did have a blackened shrimp salad one time and didn’t find it to be anything particularly special, though it was fresh and fairly plentiful. Great one of a kind spot in Anchorage for comfort food on a cold day — just get takeout or you may find yourself chilled further by the constantly opening door and drafty establishment. Although I do suppose much of the charm could be taken from dining in a converted older home.
