Service is always very slow because they take at least 15 minutes just to make a sandwich. The sandwiches are meh. I’ve given up on ordering the breakfast burrito because they are almost always«out of eggs,» as if it’s difficult to get more eggs. The chicken soup has almost no chicken in it. The broccoli soup has almost no broccoli in it. The coffee is bad.

If you have a ton of time and are prepared to wait a while for your food then definitely go here. I’ve eaten at Beanster’s in the League at least ten times now and every time it’s the same scenario– I’ve arrived at a slow time intentionally so I don’t have to wait, I end up waiting an excessive amount of time(20 minutes on average) and tell myself that I will never return, I take one bite into my food and end up coming back. It’s just so sad that a place like this, in a great location, with amazing food options that all taste fresh and make me want to come back day after day, has to be so poor when it comes to making food and knowing the menu. As you can imagine, I’ve spent quite some time standing by the kitchen waiting for my food and I’m always under the impression that no one is really running the place. They have a flock of people always working but no one seems to be in charge. Employees wander about like they’re not sure what they should be doing, asking the same questions over and over and in no real rush to get orders out. Only one employee ever knows the soup of the day, even though there’s only one or two at all times. I feel like with just one day of some training this place could explode and be much more efficient. I won’t get my hopes up…

The Griffin or the St. Charles are my favorite sandwiches. A little bit of a wait(especially during the morning rush), but definitely a good place to get some coffee or grab something to eat. They also have a variety of salads and snacks. You can also use your Blue Bucks there if you are a student

I’ve heard that it can be a long wait in the afternoons when the students are about, but this morning I waited 20 mins for a freakin’ breakfast burrito and there was only 1 person in front of me in line. Yes, I understand that making food is complicated if you haven’t had your morning coffee but the girls behind the counter were quite chipper. They had time to adjust the radio but didn’t start on my burrito until 10 mins after I ordered it(and it was the only food order they had at the time). They did have time to make their wraps for the day though. :( I can’t help but wonder if they forgot halfway through the task. And the burrito was meh at best. To be honest I was really craving bacon and eggs and since this was the closest thing to my work I thought it might work out. I could’ve walked to an actual breakfast place and already been halfway through my meal by the time my burrito arrived. The girls behind the counter seem to lack supervision and time management. I should’ve just eaten my $ 5 bill, it would’ve been tastier and less time consuming. This place gets an extra star for the decent soups they have at lunch time though, once again, if you’re willing to wait.

Because it denotes excessive time spent on campus, I’m sorry to say that I’m able to provide a comprehensive comparative review of the different campus coffee places run the University Unions. Somewhat shockingly, Beanster’s at the League makes eating on campus a pleasant option. The wood interiors are nice, the dining area is spacious, and the food is actually darn good. I think the kitchen here is bigger than its Beanster cousins at UGLi or North Campus, so they have many more food options, and it’s more often freshly made. They have the elusive vegetarian breakfast sandwich down pat. This semester, they added the Haley’s Starter: scrambled eggs, sauteed zucchini, and goat cheese. Delicious, and a standout among the safe but boring field of egg and cheese sandwiches. The egg seems freshly cooked, instead of the egg-flavored hockey pucks from Bruegger’s or Panera. You can get the sandwich on a bagel instead of the English muffin at no extra charge. The workers behind the counter are always amazingly, but not abrasively, chipper at 7:45 in the morning. As Sara G noted, lunch time finds too long a line, but breakfast is usually swift.

Food: 3.5 stars Coffee: 3 stars Sheer convenience: 5 stars Inside the Michigan League you’ll find old wood, fancy carpeting, the ghosts of faculty wives past, mock vintage furniture, harried guests, jaded young students-cum-caterers, faculty white rabbits and… Beanster’s. You’ll also find a fast food ghetto in the basement(let’s pretend I didn’t write that). When I’m rushed for time, or the weather is dreadful, or if I’m particularly craving a Griffin or California sandwich, Beanster’s is a great place to grab and go Go GO! I also appreciate their modest fresh fruit offerings(apples, bananas). Their salads are generously portioned for being under $ 7(and featuring such tasties as dried cherries, bleu cheese, grilled chicken and tuna salad). Make sure to come early or overshoot the noon hour, else you’ll be waiting in a rather long line. Be prepared to play with your smartphone. As a study hall or second office, it’s a far sight better than the Union, IMHO. Plus: they make a pretty tasty breve.
