Pretty standard quality compared to other Mexican food I’ve had that was homemade, made in Detroit or made in Chicago… Yes, I know I’ve been rather spoiled by previous restaurant scenes… That being said, I do appreciate the family’s effort put into the fairly large menu of authentic Mexican cuisine offerings. Also between them offering the comfort food of an elote and *free* tostadas and salsa(free anything is an extremelyyy rare find for Ann Arbor), I decided to give an extra star.

Pretty crummy. I so badly wanted to like it, but just no. We tried three different things(recommended by our server) and everything tasted like it was assembled from various cans by a college student. Wanted to douse the food in hot sauce to make it more palatable, but they didn’t have any.(!!!) I’m kind of flabbergasted at all the positive reviews.

Best Mexican joint in the area! Friendly service and good food for decent prices. Fish taco was a little dry(still good) but cheese enchiladas were out of this world!

Pretty good, but not great. If I could give it 3 ½ stars I would. The food tasted fresh and was good for the most part, even though the beans and rice were completely forgettable. Portion sizes vary wildly between dishes. The place felt a little grungy, but I Think a lot of that has to do with location in a strip mall. The staff was friendly enough, but seem shorthanded on a regular weekday night. We will probably be back, but only because it’s only about a mile from our home.

In short: authentic, refreshingly delicious, affordable mexican food(a rare find in Ann Arbor) and friendly, laid back staff make this place my new favorite mexican restaurant in town. Lunch prices are $ dinner are on the edge of $$. They had me at horchata. For those of you who don’t know horchata is a delicious mix of almond milk cinnamon and magic. You can get mixes for it, but these guys make their own and the difference is huge. I think the waiter tried to describe other flavors of agua fresca too, but after I heard horchata I couldn’t think about anything else. They have complimentary salsa and chips(a must have for me). Of the two they brought out, the green was the better than the red. Then our waiter asked us if we liked spicy foods(of course we do) and went into the back. We could just hear someone in the back say«Con huevos?» then laugh a bunch. I doubt he was talking about eggs. Then he brought out this awesome smoky spicy salsa that was our instant favorite. I ordered the special, parrillada, so I don’t know if they’ll always have it or not. I can say their beans were good, i.e. not the mush that comes in a can or a vat. It also came with a grilled green onion and jalapeño that were spot on. I’m pretty sure the cut was a skirt steak or flank steak, which Mexican cooking always works some magic on that I’ve never been able to figure out myself. Don’t take my word for it. This place is pretty cheap, so you’ve nothing to lose. Go try it!

Simple and authentic! Mi Compadre offers many dishes that I have never tried before. I ordered the huarache, and it was so delicious. Many of my friends ordered the breakfast options(chorizo scramble, huevos rancheros), and I enjoyed the bites that I stole. This is a great place for a casual, authentic meal. There is a good amount of seating for groups as well as small tables.

Pros: Food seemed authentic Service was great and food was served quickly Chips were free and constantly replaced Cons: Flavor was bland Small portion sizes for what I ordered(Tlayuda), and a pretty high price Chips were served cold(personally would have preferred them heated) Overall it’s a decent restaurant. Wouldn’t mind stopping here to try something different, based on other reviews. Maybe I’m unconsciously biased and somehow comparing them to my experiences in LA.

Food tastes good but the portions are too small for the price. I would write more about it but there’s nothing more you need to know.

Entrees were really good, and chips and salsa were great! I had the Tlayuda with chirizo. The sausage was nice and spicy but the bites that were sans meat were also sans flavor. My wife had the enchiladas and really enjoyed them, probably because the sauce on the enchiladas added more spiciness and flavor to her dish.

Been here twice. First time for lunch. Second, breakfast. Enjoyed the huarache and tlayuda. But overall, the food is a bit milder and lacking flavor when compared with other similar Mexican fare. Did not care for the huevos rancheros. Good horchata and agua fresca. All three salsas are tasty and fresh. Service is friendly. Food is alright.

If you like slow service and bland mediocre Mexican food served at or just slightly above room temperature this is the place for you! My wife and I went there based on the Unilocal recommendation, I wonder if restaurant paid for the other glowing reviews.

Since Mi Compadre is right down the street from my work, I usually eat there once a week. Here are the highlights: — if you like to eat spicy, ask for the hot salsa(dark reddish-brown color) with the chips. It has this delicious smoky flavor. I think I’m addicted to it — Try the Chile Relleno that’s on special. They do it right here. A poblano pepper that still has some firmness to it, battered, fried, and filled with cheese — covered in a tasty, unique red sauce; not a generic enchilada sauce used on everything. It’s delicious — steak tacos are excellent — try the homemade drinks. Piña and tamarindo are terrific. And the horchata here is thick and tastes like a potable rice pudding! Way to go, Mi Compadre, we are friends indeed. Keep up the quality and we’ll have a good relationship for some time to come!

As a native Southern California girl, I’ve been missing one of my favorite things about home: the abundance of great Mexican food. When Mi Compadre moved in, I knew I had to try it as soon as possible! I ordered chicken fajitas to go and I definitely was not disappointed! Delicious chicken, onions & peppers, with rice, beans, salad, corn tortillas, chips & salsa, and an array of hot sauces. The fiancé and I split it and we were both full! I’m excited to come back and eat in the restaurant. The enchilada selection looked worthy of trying! Most excellent. There is also plenty of parking and the people working there are very friendly and attentive.

We ate breakfast here on a Saturday and had the Huevos con papas and the Huevos con chorizo. Both dishes were really good, solid Mexican food. Being from Arizona we are used to more spice in our food and they happily have us the spicy salsa which was really smokey, spicy and tasty. Good service, great ambience. We will definitely be back!

Watch out TMAZ. There’s a new kid on the block(aka Packard) vying for the Mexican food demand in the Ann Arbor area. This place has the food and the prices to compete. I came in for a quick lunch before work and was surprised that it was not busier. I opted to get the tacos because that is what I use to judge a Mexican restaurant at baseline. $ 7 got me two good size tacos with beans and rice for a side. Can’t beat that price. The tacos were filled with protein, and the meat was tender and well flavored. Especially the al pastor, which I would highly recommend. Everything comes with a generous amount of chips and salsa as well. The red sauce is better than the verde. I also had water with pineapple crushed into it. I know it sounds odd, but if you try it you won’t be disappointed. Service was great and I got out of there in no time with a full belly. Overall: fantastic place to get Mexican food in Ann Arbor in a plaza with lots of parking and closer to campus than TMAZ

I purchased a Groupon, and I’m glad I did. Bae and I will definitely be back. I had Tlayuda(corn masa tortilla with beans, avocado, onion, tomato, Oaxaca cheese) and Bae had the chicken enchiladas. We were both really impressed. The chips and salsa that we got before our meal were on point. I am a mega fan of salsa verde, and Mi Compadre’s was nice and spicy. The salsa roja had a deliciously different flavor in it, too — I’m still trying to put my finger on it. Our service was top-notch. The server was friendly, knowledgeable, and chatted with us about his background. He was super attentive, even with quite a few tables. You know I inquired about allergens. Sometimes when I ask about frying oil, servers answer my questions with some disdain. This guy immediately(and happily) went and checked without needing my request to do so. Thanks, pal. This was a really quality restaurant experience. Mi Compadre is a bit off the beaten path, though, so I hope they stay in business! Given the amazing food and level of service, I have a feeling that we’ll be friends for a while.

I found this place though Unilocal and stopped by for dinner with a friend. Parking is easy and once you walk in, there are booth to left and right and tables in the middle… self seating, so seat any where you like… we grabbed a table and the waiter brought water and menu along with chips and salsa… I already knew what I wanted, but I also decided to get their soup as well. If you look by the cash register, they have a sign with specials… don’t forget those as some of the special offerings looked good. Between my friend and I, we ordered: — pollo con mole — Tlayudas — Caldo de Marisco — fish soup The chips and salsa’s were decent… couldn’t tell them apart from other Mexican restaurants… if you run out, ask for more :) — Caldo de Marisco — as the menu states, this is a fish soup… the soup has different fish chunks and shrimps with onions… it does have heavy fish smell, so if you are put off by fish smell, skip this dish. As for taste, decent… ask for extra cilantro and add to the soup and it’ll bring out more flavors. — Tlayudas — I guess you can call it a Mexican pizza… the dough they used is not a flour tortilla or corn for that matter. it’s more thicker to compensate the heavy load of toppings… we ordered with steak — which was bit dry and salty. — Pollo con mole — I expected the mole to be black. but it was green… either way, the dish was delicious… the mole was seasoned well, the chicken was warm, juicy and easy to break with just using fork. It came with white rice and small patch of greens(no dressing)… I have to say, this was my favorite dish there so far. Service was great, the servers stopped by often and checked on us… whatever we asked for, they provided(extra chips, salsa’s, cilantro, etc) — this is why I’m giving 4 stars… looking forward to revisiting to try their breakfast offering and other dishes on the menu.

I visited Mi Compadre during their first week«soft opening» in January 2015, when they didn’t have a permanent menu, and the subsequent outings were definitely an improvement on an already inexpensive and authentic tasting Mexican diner. The waitstaff is consistently friendly, and seating has been quick, even when things have been busy. They’ve seemed to balanced out the early days of inadequate amount of wait staffing, and the food has come out in an appropriate length of time, perhaps a bit on the long side of normal — but then maybe that was just my stomach thinking for me. There’s free chips and salsa, and the horchata was great. The tamarindo, however, is a bit on the bland side. The steak tlayupas, «mexican pizza», are good as are the chicken mole. Few things to be aware of: — As of February 2015, they’re still cash only. — There’s a traditional Americana breakfast options until noon! — While the tacos are just listed for lunch, you can have them for dinner — just ask. It’s exciting to have an inexpensive Mexican restaurant this far into Ann Arbor(La Fiesta Mexicana, La Fiesta Taquiera, and Temaz Taquiera being much further east of Ann Arbor), and hope they can keep up the tastiness with the cheapness!

Clean, simple, neighborhood Mexican diner with authentic Oaxacan street food: tlayudas, memelas, huaraches, etc. Great that we have such options in Ann Arbor now — aside from Taqueria La Casita’s sopes, etc. in Ypsi, I haven’t seen such antojitos elsewhere. Mexican breakfasts here look good, but they’re only served before noon. Will have to come back to try their eggs with molcajete sauce. They also do traditional American breakfast, including homemade corned beef hash and omelettes to order. Our kids loved their caldo de mariscos — like a minestrone soup with big chunks of salmon, tilapia, squid, and shrimp. And the flan, of course, which was refreshingly not swimming in a caramel sauce, and more the consistency of a soft cheesecake. Nothing too fancy here — just a good Mexican diner. The horchata and tamarindo are from a mix, but you can go to TMaz for real agua frescas and wider taco selection. But a nice, new, clean Mexican restaurant offering something new is always to be celebrated!
