This place is a good Chinese supermarket – too bad it got bought out by another company. Selection is good(though not as good as it used to be with the previous ownership). This definitely beats all the other«Asian marts» that have few Chinese food/cooking ingredients/sauces/etc.(as opposed to food stuffs from other countries).

For years, this has been my go to spot for frozen dumplings and wontons. The place is close to the heart of Annandale and right next to A&J. However, I hate to be the bearer of bad news. This place is closing down real soon per the cashiers and the store’s shelves looking barren. The cashiers told me that they don’t know what’s going to happen as far as relocating, but for now all they know is that this supermarket is closing down. Truly unfortunate. I guess they couldn’t keep up with Great Wall, Super H Mart, and Lotte. Kam Sam: I’ll stand on the corner and pour a 40 out for you… into my mouth.

Kam Sam is a normal size grocery store, but I guess we’re all used to the ginormous Super H Mart and Grand Mart size places, so it can feel a little small and cramped. This is a good place to get Chinese and some Japanese stuff. They do have some items that I haven’t been able to find at other Asian groceries. I guess those things aren’t so popular with non-Chinese peeps. There is a pretty big selection of frozen tong yuan(rice cake balls stuffed with black sesame, red bean paste, or lotus seed paste that you usually eat with sweet soup), which I haven’t been able to find elsewhere. The black sesame tong yuan are my favorite. They also have a good assortment of of dried shrimps and scallops, and a good selection of frozen fish/meat balls. They used to sell this delicious peanut filled mochi-like roll thing, but I guess they stopped selling that. :(The tea aisle is pretty good and they have a lot of Ten Ren products. On the side they have some Asian inspired plates and bowls, and they have nice Japanese/Chinese ceramic tea cups for pretty cheap. Parking can get a little crazy at this lot though.

You can’t tell it from Little Turnpike, but Kam Sam Food is situated in a very small and tight mini-Asian mall. The grocery store is jam packed with a basically all the Chinese/Asian food products you could think of, including a hot-prepared food section, butcher, and seafood. Prices are decent.

Kam Sam is the only purely Chinese food supermarket I’ve been able to find in the DC area. The Grand Marts and the H Marts are stocked with foods from like over 80 countries which is fine and well but I find it overwhelming and I can’t always find what I want or find it quickly. This stems from my dislike of department stores and my penchant for boutique shopping. Kam Sam is located in the same building as A&J. Once I’ve had my fill of dumplings, I can shop on a full stomach with no risk of hunger-driven impulse buys. These are the items keep me coming back to Kam Sam: — 6 packs of vitasoy — Way Fong frozen dumplings — 3 for $ 1.00 mee goreng instant noodles — Prime Food mini buns w/pork — King Noodle narrow instant noodles See a trend here? I don’t cook but in the winter months I am forced by cold weather, shorter days and lethargy to stay indoors at night more often. Thank goodness I can find my frozen foods and instant noodles at Kam Sam or I would have to subsist on Easy Mac which would just be a horrible existence.

Kam Sam, you are no Mitsuwa… but we don’t have a Mitsuwa in DC… and there is only one Mitsuwa. For a small place, Kam Sam certainly has a very good selection of asian food stuffs and other interesting items. Probably the best ramen/noodle selection in DC. Prices are very reasonable — and best of all it shares the same building as A&J.
