After receiving a coupon mailer we gave Tracy Colburn of Total Care Systems a call. We told him our wood kitchen floor was looking pretty sad after ten years and we would like an estimate as well as his professional opinion as to how to handle the problem of water damaged areas around the sink and in front of the cabinets by the stove. Tracy looked at the area and told us it did not look as bad as he had expected from our explanation. He assured us confidently that although the floor would not look new it would look a lot better than it did. He demonstrated by using his buffer machine and a little polish on my hallway. Wow, the floor was shiny for the first time in a decade. Convinced we agreed to pay $ 329.60 for«Tykote Dust Free Recoating» which is supposed to «aggressively clean and refinish… to a uniform sheen» and«provide a durable protective coating.» This top performer of the Total Care Systems line up is accomplished in 3 streps :1. scrubbing with a floor prep machine using commercial cleaner 2. application of protective coating 3. top coating with«StreetShoe sheen». It sounded good. This morning we got the treatment. The total treatment. The floor is none the better for use of the«floor prep cleaning machine and I.F.T. the intensive cleaner.» Looking at the finished floor I saw a raised circle of something, which after attacking with my finger nail proved to be candle wax. I guess all the scrubbing couldn’t touch what my nail could do in an instant. A damp paper towel was my cleaning tool of choice after Tracy left. StreetShoe sheen was lacking too. The only area that has the high gloss we were looking forward to remains in the hallway, the area Tracy did for free when he evaluated the kitchen floor we were hoping could be improved. Tracy assured us that the kitchen looks«1000X better». Maybe 10%. We are not floor professionals but we are not blind either! Perhaps Tracy did not believe he would be paid at all after he started in the kitchen and realized that what he said could be greatly improved was falling short of the mark, so he didn’t do all the«blending» and shining we thought was a part of the deal. He did reduce his bill by $ 129.60 when he saw that we could not be convinced by the claims of 1000% improvement. But still, we are looking at a floor that looks basically the same with its dirt and stains as it did $ 200. ago. Tracy was upbeat and convincing but the proof is in the result and the result is our checking account is down and we are reassessing the value of putting our faith in the assurances of a confident salesperson.
